Magic 2014: Lifebane Zombie and More …

m14 logo

Let’s get to it!

Lifebane Zombie

lifeban zombie

Zombizzles are sort of back

All bummed out about the Innistad block Zombies rotating out in November? Well, don’t be! You still get about 3 months to enjoy them. M14 even brings in a new recruit into the ranks. Although most of the time he might probably be sitting on the sidellines.

He hates on Green and White (black’s enemy colors) AND has evasion. His stats are pretty bad, but if you’re getting in for 3 once in awhile it’s not too bad. You basically get to drop him on turn 3 and pre-emptively deal with a Thragtusk, Trostani, Angel of Serenity and Restoration Angel. Nice!

If you’re playing him in a Zombie tribal deck you also have Cavern of Souls to make sure he sticks. Another thing he’s good at is supporting your discard spell and making sure you don’t ‘accidentally’ get them to discard a Loxodon Smiter (always a pain).

loxodon smiterYeah, this guy

I can see hi fitting in some kind of black-white discard aggro deck with Sin Collector, Liliana of the Veil and Liliana’s Reaver. Of course the white is also to partially double up on the enter the battlefield abilities by playing Restoration Angel. And you might even want to consider a copy of this:

stronic resonatorDouble your value – Double your fun!

I really like that it allows us to permanently deal with Angel of Serenity. This card is such a pain to play against and it becomes a bigger headache in multiples. All in all, it’s nice to see black getting this nice little boost as I feel that it’s the most underplayed color in the current standard format (with Red or White being the most played.)

Imposing Sovereign

imposing sovereign

Blind Obedience on legs

Imposing Sovereign is sure to revitalize the White Weenie archetype. Just like it’s enchantment counterpart it makes Advent of the Wurm and Restoration Angel lose a bit of their effectiveness. I’m little befuddled as to why the creature type is simply ‘Human’ . Would it have been a stretch to make it an ‘Advisor’ or something?

Dismiss into Dream

dismiss into dream

The blue ‘Abyss’?

I was joking at a local card shop as to how ridiculous this card is. At 7 mana however, I don’t see it entering the realm of competitive Magic. Still, your opponent’s creature basically gain the disadvantages of cards like Phantasmal Image. If you have an easy way to target over and over for free or almost free – you’re set!

In commander this basically becomes downright unfair. All your pingers basically one-shot anything with needed cards like Basilisk Collar. Plus it takes card of indestructible dudes like this guy.

Encroaching Wastes

encroaching wastes

Finally, we can run something other than Ghost Quarter

Nice! we get a Wasteland variant in Standard! Tectonic Edge was pretty decent when it was in Standard (plus it’s even run in a few Modern decklists). This one feels a little more underwhelming still. Kind of like it had a little label that said:

“In case of emergency, crack land!”

I mean, 4 mana ? Really? I guess the Theros lands are going to be crazy good for this effect to cost 4 mana. We don’t get any dual lands or other lands in Magic 2014 for those of you who are not aware. So basically pick them up now and hope you get to use them productively later.

Barrage of Expendables

barrage of expendables

A really great throwback

Ever since there was that Red/White/Black Zombie Bombardment deck in Legacy, people have been reacquainting themselves with Goblin Bombardment. This card is a great tribute to the might enchantment.

goblin bombardment

I wish I had an army of Goblins

Barrage of Expendables will probably see play in a Red/Black Zombies list just like Mortarpod had a few years ago. There’s also other things you can do – like run it in a Boros deck to have your Fiend Hunters permanently remove opposing creatures while maybe even taking down an additional 1-toughness creature. It’s also a great way to defend yourself against Boros Reckoners. You block them and sacrifice your creature before damage is deal, that way the Boros Reckoner is temporarily contained while your life total is preserved.

You can also use it against decks running cards like Supreme Verdict so that you can get some extra ‘reach’ against them by doing a few extra points of damage. Also, you can sacrifice anything they target with cards like Warleader’s Helix (soon to see much more play) so that they don’t get to gain 4 life. Likewise, it can be used to tick down opposing planeswalkers when you are unable to attack them.

Here’s a few other suggestions thanks to our good friend ‘Gatherer’.

Tenacious Dead

tenacious dead

They really want us to miss Reassembling Skeleton, huh?

Voraciosu Wurm

voracious wurm

Why must they always print superior Grizzly Bears ?

A few more reprints were confirmed as well:

Rewind, Sign in Blood, Briarpack Alpha, Gladecover Scout, Verdant Haven, Plummet

Yeah, nothing exciting aside from maybe Rewind which was always cute with Flash creatures. Let’s hope the final 50 or so remaining cards contain a few pleasant surprises.

In the meantime, you can Pre-Order your singles here!

Magic 2014: Haunted Plate Mail and more

m14 logo

Back already! A few nice cards were recently spoiled, so let’s take a look:

Haunted Plate Mail

haunted plate mail

Pretty legit card right here

Woah! I had to actually do a double take after reading it through. Essentially we get a ‘better’ Moonsilver Spear. Instead of getting a 4/4 angel when we attack, we get to have a 4/4 when we are down to no creatures. How useful is this? Very.

Bonfire of the Damned got you down? Well, now you get to at least defend yourself with a 4/4.

Just played a Supreme Verdict ? What are you waiting for? Attack!

Losing all your creatures left and right while your opponent is +’ing his planeswalker in anticipation for a nasty ultimate? Active and attack his planeswalker.

His creatures are bigger than you? Activate Haunted Plate Mail and equip another Haunted Plate Mail. You are now attacking with an 8/8. I don’t know about you, but that’s preeeeetyyyy big!

haunted plate equip

How’s that for big?

Another neat feature after you’ve equipped and attacked is that you can then activate the untapped Haunted Plate Mail in order to block any retaliation/counterattack. This is probably going to be seen quite often if this little piece of equipment becomes popular, so keep an eye out for it.

It’s probably one of my favorite rares in M14 as it can also easily be put into a Commander deck where quite a few people just spam a bunch of planeswalkers and play multiple Wrath of God, Day of Judgment, etc.

Tidebinder Mage

Tidebinder-Mage

Take that you Greenie Meanie!

This nice little utility merfolk brings us some answers to Thragtusk in Standard and quite possibly Tarmogoyf and Scavenging Ooze in Modern. I mention mostly the green creaures because red is more apt at removing our little merfolk wizard here. Plus, there aren’t that many huge red guys you want to tap down (aside from maybe a Thundermaw Hellkite).

I can also see it getting some much needed sideboard use in Merfolk Legacy decks that sometimes have issues dealing with Maverick creatures like Knight of the Reliquary. The problem is what to side out, but I’m guessing the Cursecatchers are the first to go in that matchup.

In a more casual environment you can amuse yourself by utilizing this guy with artifacts like Distorting Lens.

distorting lens

Works well with all of the color-hate creatures

Our final little spoiler today is clearly not as ‘cool’ as the two first, but he does have his uses.

Blightcaster Mage

blightcaster

Rancor + sacrifice outlet = removal?

You can get pretty creative with little wizard. He works really well with self-bouncing Auras such as Shimmering Wings . My main gripe so far as it was with the previous Core Set is that they still have not printed an ‘Enchantress’ card  like Argothian, Verduran or Enchantress’ Presence. Playing a ton of Auras or Enchantments is not very exciting without those.

In limited he will truly shine since he basically adds value to whatever enchantments you decide to include in your deck (Pacifism, Claustrophobia, etc)

More to Come …

See you soon for even more previews of Magic 2014!

Magic 2014: Bogbrew Witch and more

m14 logo

Here’s another edition of the upcoming Magic 2014 Core Set spoilers. Let’s get things under way with somewhat of a combo card:

Bogbrew Witch

bogbrew witch

They can’t all look like Sabrina the Teenage Witch

sabrina

Not even close !

Let’s focus on what this flavourful card does:

bogbrew text

Festering Newt and Bubbling Cauldron?

So what are these cards she can search for and how do they fit in the grand scheme of things? Does she give us anything neat to do or are we just tutoring for random jank?

Festering Newt

festering newt

Festering Goblin‘s ‘evolution’

So this thing can take down 5/5 s? Nice.

Oh wait, there’s some fine print on the Witch that indicates our little Salamander enters the battlefield tapped. There will be no easy value tricks here! Still, you can block some 2 power dudes and activate the witch at your opponent’s end fof turn to slowly gather your army of salamanders.

Let’s take a look at the final piece of this odd combination of cards.

Bubbling Cauldron

bubbling cauldron

Like a mini Trading Post

Oh! I see… That’s how the poor little Newt dies. Neat! So if all goes according to plan, we can kill 4 of our opponent’s creatures AND drain them for 16 points of damage. Cool cool! This is probably going to be a nice little gimmick deck to keep around. Not really going to cost much to build and it’s fun to play with once in a while. Unless something really insane is released in M14 that makes this ‘deck’ (and I use the term loosely) viable, I don’t see this getting played in Standard. If such a deck were to exist, you probably would only need one copy of the cauldron since it’s tutorable and is less likely to be destroyed/countered (especially if it’s just put into play with the witch).

It reminds me a little bit of these past ‘built-in’ combos.

spirit of the night crewSpirit of the Night represent!

the unspeakable

So powerful it cannot be spoken of

While the ‘big’ card may seem weaker in the Bogbrew Witch ‘engine’ , the end result is much much better than these previous ‘combos’ could hope for. Plus it featured cards that potentially are more useful on their own.

It’s nice to see Wizards of the Coast redo something like this. A lot of people have complained and said it’s very Yu-Gi-Oh! ish , but I think it has its place in Magic: the Gathering as long as it’s done in small doses.

If you ever open a Bogbrew Witch in a draft format it’s definitely worth trying to incorporate in your deck (even if you only get like 0 Cauldrons and 2 Newts).

Door of Destinies

door of destiniesSlivers rejoice!

It’s been really popular since its introduction and is actively sought after still. Of course the first thing that comes to mind is Slivers, but elves are not too far behind. Granted there are not many elves out at the moment but that may change (probably after Theros block since there are no elves in Greek Mythology).

Door of Destinies is going to find its way into numerous deck, but of course most of which will be casual. A self-bouncing creature could potentially put a great deal of counters on this thing.

faerie impostorA couple of these might do the trick

fathom mage

Sprinkle some of this…

That’s just a quick example and perhaps not all that impressive but you can do some pretty sick things with it for sure. Infinite sacrificing of Persist creatures also work (just that most don’t share a creature type). You’re gonna have to choose between Ouphe or Goblin.

murderous redcap kitchen finks

                                                  Decisions, decisions …

One more before the next article

Witchstallker

witchstalker

Of course there have been many similar to it in the past

I really dislike the Hexproof ability as it produced perhaps the most unfun deck to play against in recent memory (the deck being Bant Auras in Standard, which featured Geist of Saint Traft and Invisible Stalker). It really discourages any interaction and purely gives you an advantage. At least the Shroud ability made it fair to both players.

Then again, I can’t really argue much since Magic: the Gathering is now more popular than it has ever been. They are obviously doing many things right. I just don’t think this is one of them.

Witchstalker is fierce but it fails the Restoration Angel test. The angel is not a blue or black spell, so when it is flashed in as a blocker against the Witchstalker it will block, kill it and live to tell the tale. However, since Witchstalker is hexproff you might as well enchant it with something like an Unflinching Courage before sending it off to battle. If Unflinching Courage gets countered, the Witchstalker grows, in which case Restoration Angel is no longer a problem.

big bad wolf

Come out come out wherever you are

This thing looks like the big bad wolf and in many cases it will be. It’s going to give multiple headaches to a lot of control decks out there.

That about wraps it up for…. Ok, ok! One more for the road.

Path of Bravery

path of bravery

Part Glorious Anthem part Righteous Cause

I’m not going to go into much depth about this as there are countless lifegain cards, but we’ll just leave it at this guy:

rhox faithmender

Will he be returning in M14 ?

There are many lifegain cards already in the M14 Core Set, so a return would somewhat make sense. On that note, I’m out of here.

Magic 2014: More Spoilers!

m14 logo

We’ll start off with one of the ones we were really anticipating:

Chandra, Pyromaster

chandra pyromasterUm…I guess it’s better than the last one

I honestly don’t think the anticipation was worth it. She’s kind of underwhelming overall. Definitely not a reason to crack M14 boosters, boxes or cases. I hate the fact that she can’t even burn anything relevant like the original Chandra Nalaar used to be able to.

I don’t think it would have been a stretch if she had a Pyroclasm ability as a -4 or something as well. Her artwork is by far the worst looking Chandra art ever and quite possibly worst overall planeswalker art ever (maybe tied with the new Garruk art which is pretty bad).

Let’s examine her abilities:

chandra pyromaster 1

So at best you can hit a player and redirect to an opposing planeswalker plus hit one of their 1 toughness guys for ‘value’. I use this term loosely because it’s a rather unlikely scenario. You then probably get attacked by one of their bigger creatures and die. I’m guessing this would have been ok if you had something like a Cyclops Gladiator in this set. In that case you could hit their biggest dude so they cannot block the Cyclops and then have the Cyclops ‘fight’ with one of their smaller guys and possibly deal them 4 damage. Even in that scenario, she’s not really defending herself at all. Maybe with vigilance creatures? How many of those exist in red? Yeah, not many…

chandra pyromaster 2

Not gonna lie. This is pretty damn cool!

So Wizards of the Coast decided to innovate a bit on red planeswalker abilities and I think that’s a step in the right direction. Basically, you’re going to either use this late game or start using it the turn after she came in to play on curve (since on turn 4, barring acceleration you cannot have mana to actually pay for the card. Or, in the case of it being a land, you cannot play an additional land in the turn.)

Knowing what the top card is kind of helps, in case of a format like Commander. In Legacy formats you can have ‘fun’ with this Chandra and a very frustrating Enchantment:

humility

Probably one of the most hated cards, ever!

Yeah, kind of like Ral Zarek and Stasis. When their dudes are just 1/1’s it’s easy to constantly Chandra-snipe them. Also with a Sensei’s Divining Top in there you can actually play extra cards when you’re done trouncing their creatures. Not terribly exciting, but this is the kind of deck she would be most effective in all while being able to defend herself and possibly finish the opponent off with her ultimate.

Speaking of which:

chandra pyromaster 3

Yay! Time to burninate our opponents!

So at -7 we ‘might’ get something in our top 10 cards that we can ‘triple cast’ and can potentially lead us to victory. *Sigh* I guess… If it’s a Searing Spear, it’s just 9 damage. Kind of makes us miss Chandra, the Firebrand’s 6 damage to up to 6 targets ultimate. In more casual formats you can do stuff like Triple Wheel of Fortune or something along those lines.

Final Verdict

This is not going to have been worth the wait. Whatever hype it has, it will not live up to it. We can only hope that the ‘black foil’ version they sell at Gencon looks amazing (which it probably will). Like most real-life Red planeswalkers , Chandra still has a lot to learn before she can achieve greatness.

Nightmare

nightmar

So this thing is back

and so is this:

Shivan Dragon

shivandragon

Oh joy!

I know that personally I will dread opening these up in boosters and you probably will as well. Do future generations of Magic: the Gathering players a favor and either:

A) tear these up

B) give them to new players who are just beginning to discover the wonderful world that is Magic. It might brighten some youngster’s day.

Kalonian Hydra

Kalonian Hydra

A ‘fixed’ Primordial Hydra for one mana less

Here we have a nice green fatty that is sure to be played in the upcoming Standard format since it’s slightly ahead of the curve on its abilities. If it gets to actually attack the following turn it becomes a legitimate threat as an 8/8 Trampler. This obviously gets scarier if it has been granted haste (Fervor, for example).

If you’re into attacking with big bad creatures, then this is for you. Of course, in the tradition of big green beast you’ll probably need some little mana dorks/acceleration to get them out a turn or two earlier.

Elite Arcanist

elite arcanist

Isochron Scepter , but vulnerable as a creature. Yet no mana cost limitation on what it can copy.

Strionic Resonator

stronic resonator

Mmmm…double dipping!

Strionic Resonator (not the most obvious two words in the English language) is going to be one of the coolest cards ever. Think of anything that had a ‘when’ ‘whenever’ or ‘at’ clause that you thought was awesome and double it.

Snapcaster Mage x 2 . While you don’t get the creature twice, you get to effectively ‘flashback’ 2 spells.

Acidic Slime x 2. This is just disgusting and we can prboably be glad that Acidic Slime won’t come back in M14.

Angel of Serenity x 2. If you’re on the receiving end of this, good luck!

Also comboes decently with this new card from M14:

Dark Prophecy

dark prophecy

Neat-o!

Most people are pretty excited that black gets another Phyrexian Arena style card after Underworld Connections (which was and still is not too bad). This one has both an upside and downside.

Up

You get to sort of control it by sacrificing creatures and chump blocking.

You get to potentially draw multiple cards a a turn.

Down

You can’t fully control it, so your opponent can technically finish you off by killing your creatures.

You need creatures on your side of the battlefield to utilize it.

Triple black mana cost.

Verdict

So it’s not clearly better than Underwold Connections which is currently in Standard. Dark Prophecy (cool card name) will surely see lots of constructed play early one (we won’t even mention the countless Commander decks it is going to be played in). It’s just a really well designed card from top to bottom. Great job Wizards!

Syphon Sliver

Xathrid Necromancer

Xathrid Necromancer

We now have enough cards that begin with ‘X’ to make a deck with

This card is more or less a functional reprint of Rotlung Reanimator. Of course the ‘Human’ clause is a lot more relevant than the ‘Cleric’ one. You also get double your value with things like Doomed Traveller and Loyal Cathar. The only downside to the original is that the Zombie token comes into play tapped, but I think that’s acceptable.

The card kind of allows decks like the Aristocrats to stick around in some form past the November Standard rotation. Of course they will have to adapt and try out some new cards (Dark Prophecy perhaps?).

Pyromancer’s Gauntlet

pyromancer gauntletIt’s a trap!

For all the coolness this card posesses, it has one very glaring drawback: it does nothing and I mean absolutely nothing on its own. Once you get past that, you can examine the obvious cool things it can enable. Chandra, Pyromaster becomes less of a slouch with this thing in play (she needs all the help she can get). Your Searing Spear and Warleader’s Helix s become that much more devastating.

But at what cost?

I mean, there are so many other things you would much rather be doing on turn 5 than tapping out for this thing, no?

More to come

With just over 70 cards left to spoil this set is looking fairly fun and exciting. What’s to come? Maybe more lands? Some older Modern reprints? Who know?

Stay tuned!

Magic 2014: Garruk, Caller of Beasts

garruk m14

The art on the left is ok, but Damn! that black foily version is sexy!

We finally got our M14 Garruk spoiled and boy is he something.

+1

At +1 we get basically a Lead the Stampede which is rather nice in a creature-heavy. We have become accustomed to those as of late with Naya-colored decks (those that already run Domri Rade). It’s nice, sure but nothing to get too excited about. We are paying six mana for this guy after all and we would like to be rewarded.

-3

Now we’re talking! we pay 6 mana for basically what is a Dramatic Entrance. Cute and potentially insane. In the current standard, the biggest baddest dude you can plop down is this guy:

worldspine wurm

That’s a lot of Wurm meat

Of course, if you’re going to go this route you better make sure you have some kind of sacrifice outlet so that you can benefit from the 3 5/5 Wurm tokens that this thing can churn out.

wurm token

Also known as the Advent of the Wurm token

More trample is what green needs I always say. But seriously, this might have a legitimate shot of happening in future Standard. Of course you can use his ability in Commander to cheat this next guy into play.

progenitus

Who plays Natural Order anyways ?

-7

Um….what? yeah! You get to do silly things once you hit that ultimate. So cast random mana dork, go get big huge effect fatty from deck and unleash all kinds of fun. Repeat as you wish, preferably with some little creature you can bounce back into your hand and re-cast.

The possibilities are pretty endless on that -7. Kind of like your whole deck is in ‘Omniscience‘ mode. Your creature spell just needs to be cast and not actually resolver. You know how to cast creature spell don’t you? Just put your finger on the appropriate land cards and tap.

Black foily version?

Of course if you’re like me (total fanboy) you won’t just settle for cracking a M14 Garruk in a pack or even getting a shiny one. You’re obviously after the big loot.

m14 garruk black foil

Looking for this?

I mean, seriously, how cool is this? It looks more like a comic book cover than a Magic: the Gathering card. It’s one of five M14 planeswalkers available in alternate art black foil. You can only get the at the Hasbro booth at the San Diego Comicon.

The exclusive MTG cards are not on that page but they are confirmed. I really wish I could go grab some or at least convince anyone headed down there to pick me up a set of the 5 black foil planeswalkers. Reply to this post if you can do me that favor. Otherwise, I would have to try to get a group of us from Montreal to head down to San Diego.

Magic 2014: Spoilers to date 5

We finally get more relevant goodies from M14 and we’ll start off with the big one:

Mutavault

mutavault

I guess it makes sense with Slivers being back

Nice, so they give us a rare worth opening packs for! Despite being a reprint and just a rare versus a mythic this card will be in rather high demand. It allows us to do pretty nice tricks in limited and constructed. In Standard, it wil be a manland that will be there to ready to attack opposing planeswalkers.

On another note, the lands have yet to be spoiled. Seeing as how they give us one manland, do you think we will get these?

manlands

We can hope right?

Returning Planeswalkers

returning walkers m14

Well, Ajani and Liliana were definitely coming back (plus Jace had a new version in Return to Ravnica)

Most probably this means we get a new Chandra (more or less confirmed) and Garruk. Will there be a wildcard planeswalker (Karn or a Sarkhan variant)? That would indeed be nice. The Chandra’s Phoneix reprint more or less that as usual one of Chandra’s abilities will deal the player damage, but that’s about it. Garruk’s Horde being reprinted just kind of sucks.

Celestial Flare

WW Instant

Target player sacrifices an attacking or blocking creature

Well, we at least get this for the few months that Geist of Saint Traft and company are legal. Respond to the Geist’s token-making ability and kill the little bugger. Of course this only really applies against decks like Bant Hexproof.

Shivan Dragon

shivandragon

Not all reprints are created equal

Shimmering Grotto

More to come …

As the release of M14 approaches, we will bringing you more previews from this set, so keep an eye out!

Naya Miracles

naya miracles

by Steve ‘DDT’ Giannopoulos

Ever since the inception of the Miracle mechanic in Avacyn Restored most players have been trying to abuse it with instant speed card draw such as Thought Scour and Desolate Lighthouse on their opponent’s turns. This yielded mediocre results to say the least.

What if we ‘ramped’ and ‘fetched’ a bit to maximize our odds of drawing high impact miracles and then be able to cast them ‘ahead of the curve’. This is in great part what the following deck attempts to do. It packs the ones that allw us to go ‘over the top’ versus other midrange decks and control the early game versus aggressive decks.

The Miracles featured are:

entreat the angels wallpaper

Hallelujah indeed!

Bonfire-of-the-Damned

Next level Earthquake

And…

terminus wallpaper

‘The End’ in Latin

A nice lineup of topdecks that strikes fear in most opponents’ hearts. You probably don’t want any in your starting hand of 7, but will almost always be happy to ‘topdeck’ them later on in the game. It may seem like you’re just ripping good cards off the top, but the rest of your deck contains quite a few goodies as well.

Let’s get to the list.

Naya Miracles

2 Cavern of Souls
1 Clifftop Retreat
1 Kessig Wolf Run
4 Rootbound Crag
2 Sacred Foundry
3 Slayers’ Stronghold
4 Stomping Ground
4 Sunpetal Grove
4 Temple Garden

25 Lands
2 Avacyn’s Pilgrim
4 Huntmaster of the Fells
1 Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice
4 Thragtusk
1 Aurelia, the Warleader
2 Loxodon Smiter
1 Angel of Serenity
1 Daybreak Ranger

16 Creatures

2 Bonfire of the Damned
4 Farseek
1 Mizzium Mortars
2 Searing Spear
1 Boros Keyrune
3 Entreat the Angels
1 Gruul Keyrune
1 Selesnya Keyrune
1 Garruk, Primal Hunter
3 Terminus
1 Ground Seal

20 Spells

Sideboard

1 Oblivion Ring
2 Loxodon Smiter
Terminus
1 Sigarda Host of Herons
2 Warleader’s Helix
1 Silklash Spider
2 Selesnya Charm
1 Garruk, Primal Hunter
2 Nevermore
2 Ground Seal

So it’s definitely not the Naya build you’re useed to right? Quite a few 1-ofs and a rather odd sideboard to say the least.

The main deck is full of creatures that advance our aggro and a lot that stabilize us versus quicker decks. Huntmaster of the Fells is one such creature. He can come down on turn 3 after a Farseek or Avacyn’s Pilgrim and start doing his thing. If your opponent had no play on their turn, he’ll flip and zap one of their dudes for 2 as well as the opponent. If your opponent has a smallish board presence you can always attack with the 2/2 Wolf token.

inn wolf token

Aroooooooooo!

You can also use the ability of Slayers’ Stronghold on the wolf token to force them to trade one of their bigger guys for it. If they don’t, you’ll still have the wolf hanging back ready to block or trade thanks to the Vigilance granting ability on the Slayers’ Stronghold. It’s probably one of the deck’s most common mid to late game plays and it’s actually quite good.

Another thing that Huntmaster does is that he aids us in catching up on the creature count versus decks like Aristocrats or other token decks. The 2 life gain effectively negates a Lingering Souls attack and he can then flip to kill a 1/1 Spirit token. He stems the bleeding in a big way on his won. If you draw a Farseek later on you probably want to wait until you can cast it and another sell in the same turn so that you can flip your Huntmaster and get some more life and creatures onto the battlefield.

To add to his versatility, Huntmaster of the Fells does really well against Liliana of the Veil too. Since he generates and extra creature, it makes Liliana’s -2 ability a lot less appealing to our opponents. Against deck like Naya Blitz or Mono Red, that wolf token is probably trading with a Rakdos Cackler, Experiment One or Burning-Tree Emissary. Again, if our opponent cannot pile up the pressure, Huntmaster will strike another one of their creatures down.

He also ends games fairly well while flipped versus token decks thanks to his Trample ability. This works well with Slayers’ Stronghold as well since it’s basically guaranteed extra damage.

Huntmaster-of-the-Fells-Ravager-of-the-Fells-Dark-Ascension-Mythic

Flip flip flip!

Another creature that does something similar is one that you may be sick of seeing in Standard decks for some times. Don’t worry though, its time will end in July. Nonetheless, here’s …

thragtusk

Still awesome

He does pretty much most of what Huntmaster does only somewhat differently. While he may give us more life, he doesn’t get the option to flip more than once, if at all. We aren’t running Restoration Angel, so his effects are one time only. Post Supreme Verdict he is rather insane with Slayers’ Stronghold (then again, most of our guys are. You usually name ‘Beast’ with Cavern of Souls mid to late game if you plan on dropping some of these guys versus any decks packing permission (Dissipate, Syncopate, etc).

I’ll try and save some time by not having to explain what most already know about the goodness of Thragtusk here.

The other creatures are there to get some aggro going except for the Avacyn’s Piligrim (more commonly referred to as Mana Dorks). The one-ofs can take over a game, especially Aurelia, the Warleader. She can come down out of the nowhere and win the game after you flipped a Huntmaster, shot your opponent for 2, killed a potential blocker and get ready to alpha strike for the win. It’s exactly the kind of card you want to have as a singleton. You never ever want to draw more than 1, it costs a sizeable amount of mana and it can totally take your opponent by surprise (especially once he thinks he stabilized the battlefield).

The two Loxodon Smiters may seem out of place but they really go a long way. First of all, they are probably the 3-drop creature for this deck on both offense and defense. Uncounterable means that you get to resolve it versus decks like Bant Flash our UWR Control. Four toughness means it won’t die to things like Searing Spear or other random aggressive creatures.

Late game against UW(r) decks you get to resolve it 100%, activate Slayer’s Stronghold and attack with no fear. Opponent flashes a Restoration Angel? Sure, we’re still good. If he was holding a counter, well it’s rather useless. Azorius Charm or Warleader’s Helix are their 2 only ‘real’ solutions (or Snapcaster Mage into those). The elephant can also be a great card against Liliana of the Veil decks. If you suspect that your opponent is playing this particular planeswalker, you can always just play a turn 3 keyrune in anticipation for a Liliana +1 activation. You will then get to put a nice little 4/4 onto the battlefield while they discard a real card.

loxodn smiter

Mmm… beefy!

Another very odd main deck card I want to discuss briefly is Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice. It may seem out of place in this kind of deck but I would always find myself siding it in 90%+ of the times versus any kind of deck. It used to be a Advent of the Wurm, but I found that it did not do much and you always want your turn 3/4 to be something that stabilizes the board (Huntmaster) and gives your opponent headaches. If found that against most decks that run almost exclusively burn as removal – Trostani was pretty insane.

trostani

You can never have enough life

Any one of your 2 lifegain creatures gain great value with a Trostani in play. Thragtusk gains you an additional 3 life and Huntmaster gains you 4 more. It also Populates Wolf and/Beast tokens. 5 damage burn exists in the form of Brimstone Volley, but it requires a Morbid trigger that you can smell coming a mile away. If anything Trostani will eat a couple of burn spells that would have otherwise been directed at you.

                           daybreak 1 daybreak 2

Angel of Serenity and Daybreak Ranger round-up the creatures in the deck. The Angel is a great way to recover from Mutilates, Supreme Verdicts or your opponent just having drawn wayyyy to much removal. Daybreak Ranger force your opponent to deal with it as its flipped side basically will be killing anything that’s 3/4 (Restoration Angel) or small every turn. He can also double as removal for something bigger when you activate a Slayers’ Stronghold before you use his ‘Fight’ ability.

Daybreak Ranger is probably rather questionable in the overall scope of things, but I find it’s important to actually enjoy playing with the cards you like. Sure, arguments can be made for another Loxodon Smiter, Advent of the Wurm or even maybe a Voice of Ressurgence. Those are all great cards and probably all better than the ranger, but I really like the ‘removal’ aspect he brings to this deck. None of those other cards come close (except of course a flashed in 5/5 Wurm token versus a 4/4 or small ground attacker).

I have been told that it’s rather janky looking and does not have its place, but after many many games played with the deck (and a really high win %) I can confirm that Daybreak Ranger is the correct card for the job.

What about the Miracles?

So after all this creature blah blah, we get to the ‘meat’ of the deck : the Miracles.

We have perhaps the most popular one that sees play in a few deck:

bonfireof the damned Bonfire from the Top Rope !

It’s probably the best it is at what it does. Board whipe and damage source/planeswalker kill all in one! This is especially good against lower curve Naya decks and BW token decks and their variants. You can always keep it in hand against the token decks and wait until they put a Sorin, Lord of Innistrad into play. Cast this, kill their token army and redirect the player damage to your opponent’s planeswalker. Seems legit, no?

Sometimes you will just get into these long grindy games (especially against decks that managed to resolve a Sphinx’s Revelation). You tough it out and do your best to win the game and hang in there, your deck shrinks and shrinks and then you draw it – Bonfire! You tap all your lands, keyrunes and mana dorks and go for maximum damage!

Your opponent scoops up his cards and call you a luck sack, scrub, whatever….but it won you the game.

There’s no arguing as to how ‘ugly’ or un ‘finesse-like’ finishing a game with Bonfire of the Damned is. It gets the job done, nothing fancy, that’s what it’s there for.

Speaking of winning out of nowhere…

entreat the angels

Even at X = 1 hard cast, this is a Serra Angel minus vigilance

This card is pretty insane as proven by ‘Insayne’ Alex Hayne at Pro Tour Avacyn .  It can win a game out of nowhere when cast for as little as 3 and two attack steps later. This is the card that helps you trump the midrange decks that are too ‘fair’ or go big against the more efficient aggressive decks. It is a way to say ‘no more 1/1 poking’ against decks using Lingering Souls.

Another aspect of the deck that maes Entreat the Angels good in the deck is that you ramp quite a bit. You can Avacyn’s Pilgrim, Farseek and Keyrune your way to an Entreat for 2-3 and it’s a fine play. Of course it doesn’t compare to the ‘explosiveness’ of just going ‘Miracle’ Entreat the Angels but it’s still good.

I had games where my opponent played an Armada Wurm which put him in a good position to close out the game and I just top decked Entreat to make 6 4/4 Angel tokens. Was it lucky? yeah, so what? it was just as lucky as him having drawn an Armada Wurm, really.

angel 1 angel 2 angel 3

Whichever you prefer, they’re all good when you’re laying the smackdown!

The End ?

Sometimes things Undie, they leave behind tokens when they die or just cannot be destroyed. They sometimes can even be re-cast from the graveyard. These are rather resistant to cards like Supreme Verdict.

In comes …

terminus

Stay down!

It may seem weird to be running a Wrath of God style effect in a Naya deck, but as you have already seen: this is not your traditional Naya deck. We play fair for a little while and then we like to do things that are rather unorthodox. The possibility to cast this on turn 2-5 when miracled is well worth playing in our deck. Sometimes you will just flip it an whipe out a tiny horde early on or just cast it later on to unclog the board and swing with your keyrunes and possibly a Thragtusk Beast token.

I had games end with my opponent being at 3 and having no way to actually finish them off (played both Searing Spears and Bonfires). I then cast Terminus, activate Selesnya or Gruul Keyrune and win. It’s a very unlikely scenario, but you have to at least anticipate it when all else seems lost. It’s even good mid-game when you’ve only committed thing like Huntmaster to the board. Your Huntmaster and token are only really one card as opposed to your opponent’s 2 real creatures. If you can manage to basically equalize the board with Thragtusks and Huntmaster tokens a Terminus can be a correct play if it means you held some cards back and can recover/gain an advantage post-Terminus.

Same priciple applies if all you’ve been doing is churn out 3/3 beast tokens with Garruk, Primal Hunter all day. Get to 6, Terminus the board and ultimate Garruk afterwards. You’re almost always in better shape than the post Terminus, except if they are running something like Aetherling. In that case you are probably not going to be casting Terminus anyways.

The ‘Key’ to Victory

You undoubtedly noticed that the deck is running 1 of each of the Naya-colored keyrunes. This is really not as random as it seems. Of course one of the main things they do is accelerate our mana so that we can make more explosive plays later on. That’s not all they do. In games versus more controllish decks, they allow us to keep attacking after our opponent has played some ‘destroy all creatures’ spell . It may seem ordinary right now as most everyone is playing aggressive or midrange decks, but you do get those control match-ups once in a while.

It may not seem like much, but a Boros Keyrune + Slayers’ Stronghold is 6 damage. This is 1/3 of your opponent’s life total. It also allows us to first strike kill things like opposing Thragtusks. Sometimes we’ll even be killing off opposing planeswalkers with it. Now that’s value!

The Selesnya Keyrune is the most unimpressive one in terms of ability, but it is also the best one on its own merits (ie: no boosts). It blocks the odd attacker when it has to and does a good job at killing a Liliana of the Veil.

Finally, the Gruul Keyrune is just great for when we need to do some major trample damage. If your opponent is clinging to a Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and just made a 1/1 vampire token, then this keyrune is a great way of making sure his Sorin does not stay in play for long.

All in all the keyrunes provide us with the opportunity to run 4 colorless lands. This is probably the highest number of colorless lands in any Standard deck. Between these and a Farseek, we are rarely ever color-short.

All this and a side of …

The first thing I want to address in the sideboard is the choice of Rest in Peace versus Ground Seal.

rest in peace versus ground seal

Many pros, cons and options were considered but it basically came down to this. I believe the traditional White decks are more inclined to running Rest in Peace. I tried it and really convinced myself it was the right choice. In the end however, I was extremely dissatisfied by it. It slowed down my gameplan, it was a wasted card if drawn in multiples (except versus the Reanimator matchups, and even then…). I then did a Gatherer search and found Ground Seal (i barely recall it being a one of maindeck in Jund lists).

Running Ground Seal gives us some advantages:

1) You can run one in the maindeck.

Much like the Standard Jund decks out there, I decided to put one Ground Seal main deck and go with a 61-card deck. It replaces itself so it’s not actually costing a card and its cost is low enough that it does not increase our mana curve (well, the non-miracled one).

2) It does not slow down our aggro plan or cost us much tempo.

So we’re there casually attacking our reanimator or Snapcaster Mage deck opponent and we draw a Rest in Peace. Argh! this doesn’t help us or advance our cause and can be rather bad in our opening hand. Ground Seal is basically a 1G : draw a card and potentially slow down your opponent. Reanimator runs Abrupt decays and Acidic Slimes, so neither enchantment stays in play for long.

3) It is not bad in multiples.

Knowing that each Ground Seal in play allowed us to draw an extra card gives us a warm and fuzzy feeling. Knowing that each Rest in Peace cost us a card is frustrating.

The main argument FOR Rest in Peace is versus Voice of Reason (which is not that good against us). If our Ground Seal gets destroyed our opponent can still do reanimator/Snapcaster shenanigans. This is less true for Rest in Peace, as it would have already gobbled up a part of their graveyard (less true for an early Reast in Peace).

selesnya charm

Almost always go with option # 2

From Obzedat to Angel of Serenity passing by Thragtusk, this cards is a must. Think of it as a Swords to Plowshares for opposing fatties. It’s also rather effective against Naya Blitz decks that will try to bloodrush their guys with Ghor-Clan Rampager. Against other weenie builds, you can consider it as a ‘burn’ if you can trade your 2/2 token for one of their dudes.

Quoth the Raven …

nevermore

Hmmmm.. what to hate?

So you played against Reanimator and want to hate on Unburial Rites, you go ahead and drop this naming Unburial Rites. Your opponent casts an Acidic Slime and kills your Nevermore. Booh!

You just lost to Aetherling and really don’t see how you can deal with it. Your opponent casts his one Aetherling in his deck before you manage to draw Nevermore. Oops!

So, what exactly is this for?

Well, unless you have been hiding under a rock for the greater part of the year, you most likely noticed a certain card in Standard can be quite painful to play against. It can totally swing a game from you losing to you totally winning. (hint: it’s NOT a Miracle).

Sphinx's Revelation

Awesomeness or Soul Crushing, depending which side you’re on

Yeah, that’s the one! We can all joke about how potentially Reverberate can be used against it, but c’mon! We just don’t want this to resolve – ever. The most proactive way to do it is to just pre-emptively cast Nevermore and name the card. Yes, this is pretty much almost the sold reason for Nevermore being in the sideboard. It’s justified, to say the least.

But wait, there’s more

Actually, there isn’t much more. The rest of the side is pretty much a metagame call. I chose to go with cards that are better against what I believe is my worst matchup: BG Desecreation Demon deck. If this thing resolves a Disciple of Bolas Sacrificing a Desecration Demon early on, it’s more or less game over. You don’t ever want that to happen , ever!

Most miracles are also very worthless against a deck packing 4 main deck Mutilates as well as Desecration Demons. Mutilate is just disgusting versus an Angel army at any point in the game. Desecration Demon also does a decent job against them as sacrificing an Angel token to allow my other tokens to attack is not my idea of winning.

Sigarda and Loxodon Smiters are versus Liliana and Garruk is there because that deck puts like zero pressure early on and they also play Garruk (Relentless , though).

Terminus?

This about wraps up the Naya Miracles article. I hope you guys enjoyed it and I will be back soon with another feature article on another obscure deck no doubt.

Magic 2014: Spoilers to date 4

It’s time for even more Magic 2014 (M14) spoilers. This time we start off with this little gem:

Brave the Elements

It’s back to make white weenie viable again

For those of you who were sick and tired of losing your little weenie horde to a Bonfire of the Damned (miracled or not), Wizards has the answer for you. Mind you this will probably be more played in a Green/White aggro style of deck but who knows – we might yet see a real white weenie contender.

Its offensive capability is rather great as it can allow pretty much your whole team through something like a wall of Thragtusk or 3/3 Beast tokens if you’re going in for the killing blow. I can’t wait to get a chance to play this again in Standard.

Doom Blade

Does it simplify or complicate the black removal suite (Ultimate price, Murder, etc) ?

That ends another preview Blog for Magic 2014 and I for one think that the limited experience is sure to be dynamic to say the least. As far as constructed goes, I hope we can still get some more Standard playable cards before the totality of the set is revealed.

Here’s hoping!
