Fixers!

The deck illustrates an important point when you are playing a 5-color Commander deck : Fix your colors and mana. Ramp it up and Tutor as much as possible. Once there, all your big spells will be castable and almost always great. A lot of staples are in the deck, so feel free to use it as reference for when you need some inspiration as to what would be missing in your own Commander decklist.

Dragon’s Maze Preview: Ral Zarek and more…

wave 1

Ral Zarek

ral zarek

Izzet Planeswalker time ?

He’s finally arrived and is much better than expected. You get a little Ajani Vengeant and Tamiyo in addition to a pretty sweet ultimate ability!

ral zarek ability 1

The first ability is definitely a better Tamiyo +1. You can tap down one of their dudes and give pseudo-vigilance to one of yours post combat. Of course it gets better depending on what you would be untapping.

Land = extra mana

In that respect he’s like half a Garruk Wildspeaker. Not too shabby! He can ‘ramp’ you so that one turn 5 with a land drop you would have 6 mana available. Where are those Titans when you need them?

Then there’s other cool things you can untap like Staff of Nin.

staff of nin

Woah! Shock at every turn!

Maybe we can get enough searches on Staff of Nin to start a Twitter Trend? LOL

The list goes on, but essentially any creature that would tap for an effect can now get more ‘value’ in a deck featuring Ral Zarek. I know that I will personally be adding it to my Blue/Red Pingers EDH deck. Extra turns might be heavily frowned upon in Commander, but his ultimate will not really be what I am aiming for in that deck anyhow. Eventually i’ll post a list or something, but I assure you it’s a low budget deck I made purely to fool around and contains no ‘big’ cards. Ral Zarek would be the ‘money’ card.

ral zarek ability 2

Ah, Lightning Bolt

As for ability Number 2 we get one half of the Ajani Vengeant -2 . Even half an Ajani is good really.

There’s not much to say about this one except that you can use it to finish off opposing ‘walkers. This will definitey happen quite often (except in cases where he will just enter the battlefield and ‘planeswalker rule’ an opposing Ral Zarek away.)

ral zarek ability 3

The ultimate to end all ultimates? Probably not, but one can dream.

Will this raise the value of cards like Krark’s Thumb?  Probably… If you bothered checking the price you would know that it already has!

krarks thumb price

This used to be in ‘Bulk Rare’ territory

While you most probably won’t get a full 5 turns of goodness with his ultimate, chances are you will get 1-3 turns. Zero is just sad! it is however a grim possibility. In that respect Tamiyo, the Moon Sage clearly possesses the better Ultimate.

Deputy of Acquitals

Pauper decks rejoice!

Here we have a great common even the Azorius haters can get behind. How can you say no to this guy? He’s a ‘better’ Whitemane Lion.

The may clause makes him better for sure, but the color restrictions make him a little less flexible (a-la Restoration Angel). You get to save one of your creatures for a smaller price than Restoration Angel. You can also flash him in as a blocker and return a good ‘enters the battlefield’ creature back to your hand. It can also work pretty well with Bloodrush creatures in limited.

Melek, Izzet Paragon

melek

Commander material!

An obvious inclusion in any Commander deck featuring the colors Blue and Red. I’m really glad to see that he is not a Mythic as most of these kinds of cards end up in Mythic Rarity these days.

An interesting note is that he allows you to know what your top card is. Miracles making a small resurgence? Maybe…

He is rather small-sized for his cost but of course his abilities more than make up for it. He is one ‘Weird Wizard’ to say the least!

Render Silent

Kev Walker drawing an Izzet card? Sweet!

The regular art

I’m way more of a fan of the card’s artwork, but the ability is nice. One of the things that got me into this fabulous game was Kev’s art. I used to mock Collectible Card Games a lot before I was introduced to them in the year 2000. I usually stereotyped the players as little basement geeks that played Dungeons and Dragons. Much has changed since then….

So here we have another Azorius guild card which is basically Counterspell and Silence  jammed together in the same card. I can really get behind this card to a certain degree. The great thing about most counters is that they usually cost less than the cards they are countering. This card is probably not an ‘efficient’ counter. It does stop would be combo decks if they were to arise (featuring cards like Epic Experiment) .

I can see it being played in Commander and the like, but really how many counters can you shove into those decks? If anything it will give them options if you are having problems finding the ‘optimal’ cards.

Fuse cards

beck call

Glimpse of Nature + Token generation

toil trouble

Sign in Blood + Storm Seeker

wear tear

‘Disenchant’ x 2 or Duergar Hedge-Mage

These are sure to find their way into many many decks for years to come and are great cards. We’ve seen them before in multiple blocks (Invasion, Ravnica, Time Spiral). This time however, you can cast both sides if you wish. This is something most of us have dreamed about and now we can. (You used to be able to cast either side with Isochron Scepter, but that is a story for another time).

Until next Spoiler Wave, keep that mana flowing!

Dragon’s Maze Preview: Maze’s End

DGM Mazes End

Ah! Seems like a deck

When they first announced the whole Dragon’s Maze random card replacing the basic land idea, people got excited. Of course for sealed deck purposes you would like a Guild gate or a dual land. They also mentioned one land would be mythic. It did not take people long to correctly guess that it would be something to do with Gates.

At first glance, it seems like a joke. However, those of us that have been around the Magic scene long enough know that given enough time even the most unlikely of win conditions can be achieved (Battle of Wits for starters). This one seems a heck of a lot easier to fulfill. We don’t know if there will be cards that get any land but there’s already this and Gatecreeper Vine which is a start.

gatecreeper

Yeah! this guy!

It’s sure to be a hit in some casual decks as well, featuring Primeval Titan (banned in Commander). Since it’s the pre-release card, it should be super easy to trade for as well. I’m looking forward to reading decklist and articles featuring this card in the months to come.

Mark my words: this will be a deck!

GP Promo: All is Dust

all is dust promo

All around cool card

As many of you may have heard: this is the new Grand Prix promo. It’s pretty epic and sees play competitively here and there as well as in Commander (probably the best way to reset the board). Also, it’s playable in any deck really, which will raise or at least maintain its value.

As with many promos, I prefer the original art. Of course, it goes without saying that so did Wizards of the Coast artistic department since they choose which version of the card makes it in the regular set (see Emrakul)

Judge Promo: Swords to Plowshares

stp promo foil

Hello friend

Here’s one of the newer Judge Promos that’s been going around. It’s always been a staple card in Legacy formats as well as EDH/Commander. The original FNM Promo is almost impossible to find and carries a huge price tag. Now you can all have a second chance of ‘pimping’ your Swords to Plowshares.

The art on it is blah and I wished they would of use the Elspeth vs. Tezzeret art, but that’s a minor thing. All in all, I find that Wizards of the Coast is doing an excellent job with promos (both Judge and FNM) these days.

Dragon’s Maze Preview: Ruric Thar, the Unbowed

RuricTharTheUnbowed

I know he’s definitely going in my RG Commander deck

Well, we have one more card spoiled from Dragon’s Maze and he’s pretty good for a fatty. Good stats for his cost and basically turns into a burn spell unless he is dealt with by a creature (ie: Fiend Hunter). He is a guild champion and each guild will have one. The artworks and names were spoiled at PAX but so far he is the only fully spoiled one.

He will probably fetch a decent price unless of course he happens to be the pre-release card of the Gruul guild (possible as he is not a mythic). Either way, it’s a pretty cool way to start things off with as well as knowing the Return to Ravnica duals are also in Dragon Maze.

Duel Deck: Heroes vs. Monsters

mtg heroes

Another Duel Deck? Thanks Wizards!

Time for a good old Duel Deck. After Sorin Vs. Tibalt we get this creature type versus creature type one ( a la Elves vs. Goblins and Knights vs. Dragons). I definitely prefer these to the planeswalker ones as they are more geared toward certain interactions instead of being a random reason to bundle decent cards together. Obviously tribal interactions have been present in the past decks, but unless there is a ‘hero’ or ‘monster’ creature type, I am assuming this is just your good guys versus big evil creatures theme.

mtg heroes symbol

Athough, who knows with Magic? They have been doing many new things recently and don’t seem to be slowing down. Being of Greek descent, I can only hope the rumours of the next expansion: Theros to be true. It is speculated that the block will tie into Greek Mythology, which is the best kind of Mythology (*wink*).

The Duel Deck will feature 6 preview cards from Theros. That alone should be a great reason to buy a copy or two of this deck. They are usually value-packed and it’s always a good idea to keep a couple of the decks intact to just play quick games againt friends that do not have their own decks. I treat it as a board game really, it’s an awesome way to play casual magic!

From the official description blurb it says : “These heroes grow stronger with every encounter as they assail threats beyond their imagination.”

PauperFog

pauper fog

by Steve Giannopoulos

A lot of people usually associate Magic: the Gathering with money. It’s obviously not a cheap hobby, but then again it is realatively inexpensive compared to some. Most don’t have the means or the time to dedicate to forking over hundreds of dollars for a deck they will need to modify every so often. It gets even worse if you are trying to keep up with all the top tier decks just to be able to compete in your local FNM’s.

Fortunately, there exists a format called Pauper. It has its own ban list and you can probably just Google the specifics, but the interesting thing is that even outside of the format: the deck are competitive. Of course by that I mean they can win quite often against your casual buddy’s next level Death’s Presence deck. If you want to examine some nice little deck tech and get some ideas about what’s considered a decent deck, check out PDCMagic.com .

They used to have a cute little Hobgolbin Dragoon background that was appropriate. Here’s the image for those of you that are not familiar with it.

hobgoblin dragoon

Cute little moth thingy!

Pauper ‘Turbo’ Fog

4 Terramorphic Expanse
11 Island
4 Simic Guildgate
12 Forest

4 Moment’s Peace
4 Fog
4 Respite

4 Dream Twist
4 Ghoulcaller’s Bell
4 Curse of the Bloody Tome
4 Jace’s Erasure

4 Thought Scour

4 Brainstorm
4 Compulsive Research

The deck is pretty straightforward as you can see. You ‘Fog’ them when needed. Moment’s Peace give you extra life if your opponent starts off super strong and gets you low on life. The rest of the cards either draw you more cards or mill your opponent. The reasoning for Dream Twist over Mind Sculpt is because you might get to use its flashback if it’s milled or discarded depending on what you’re facing. With Ghoulcaller’s Bell, having it milled becomes a reality so you can grind out those extra cards.

dream twist

As seen in multiple Innistrad drafts

The mill is obviously less impressive than in limited due to the increase in deck size (40 to 60). It’s great that your mill comes a lot from permanents over instants/sorceries. This is the reason the more successful mill decks have used Hedron Crab, Howling Mine, etc. I’m kind of shocked to not see something like Archaeomancer in there, but I guess it’s a tad slow and when you are running Fog effects the ability to chump block is not needed.

The 1 Forest can easily be upped to 2, but with 4 Gates and 3 Terramorphic Expanses there should be no problem getting green mana. Add to that the card drawing package, it should not be an issue. I have not personally tested it, but I have it on good account that it’s a rather effective deck. The person who gave me this list is a Pauper/Commander/Two-Headed Dragon enthusiast, so I’ll take him at his word.

brainstorm

Probably the greatest common ever

Bottom line: Try this deck! It’s dirt cheap and fun. It’s always great to keep around a few pauper decks as a way to teach new players to play and eventually just give them the deck to have as their own. I believe Brainstorm is the only ‘costly’ card here and it’s not too hard to obtain.

FNM Promo for April 2013

call of the conclave fnm

Interesting

This coming month’s FNM card is Call of the Conclave. It’s not the most exciting card, but it’s still nice that they chose a Standard card this time. A lot of people still prefer the original Terese Nielsen artwork, however this one is not that bad either.

If you need to pimp your GW tokens deck, then I suggest you play in as many FNM events as you can in order to procure a playset.

So go forth and conquer an FNM event near you! Or just participate, they are also available as random door prizes.

DCI Judge FOIL: Crucible of Worlds

crucible promo

Oh my!

The newest Judge Promo was announced and it’s a doozy. It’s already great in Legacy and insane in Commander. The old frame is very cool on these artifact throwback promos and kind of makes me wish it was still the regular style for artifact cards.

You should probably wait until the price stabilizes on these as it has with many other Judge Promos. The more that get out on the open market, the greater the availability, the demand remains the same and the price…drops. You can also get your Judge certification and judge some some GPT-level or higher events to get your hands on this baby at the end of the judge rewards season.
