This category will try to bring you new content as it pertains to the card game of Magic: the Gathering. Decklists will be provided for various formats such as EDH, Standard and Legacy.
Happy Reading!
Modern is a for the most part defined as a format, but much like Legacy in its heyday you always get some fresh new decks that pop up and take you by surprise. Such was this deck that almost took down a 200+ plus PTQ.
UG FaeriesModern Format Creatures: 21 2 Scryb Ranger Instants: 9 2 Voidslime Artifacts: 7 3 Sword of Feast and famine
|
Lands: 23 2 Forest 4 Breeding Pool 2 Mutavault 3 Verdant Catacombs 4 Misty Rainforest 2 Tectonic Edge 6 Islands Sideboard 3 Kitchen Finks |
The cool thing about this deck is that you actually accelerate into some pretty nice stuff.
Turn 1 : Noble Hierarch off a Forest of Breeding Pool.
Turn 2: Mutavault and pass turn or Breeding Pool
Opponent’s Turn: they cast a 2-drop.
Activate Mutavault to turn it into a creature then Spellstutter Sprite their spell.
OR
Cast a Scryb Ranger, return a forest to hand to untap Noble Hierarch and cast a Spellstutter Sprite to counter their card.
Mana dorks. They don’t just look good, they ARE good!
It’s got way better tricks but that’s just a small early game example. You can also Time Walk your opponents that classic way by going Mistbind Clique on their upkeep and then countering something with Cryptic Command later while bouncing your Mistbind Clique to hand and having another chance to Time Walk your opponent next upkeep as well. It gets even better if you championed a Vendilion Clique with it since you get a great deal of value all while getting rid of their best card (kind of) and gaining hand knowledge.
Did you hear about the new cool Blue/Green Faeries deck?
The green splash is pretty sweet even for cards like Voidslime. Yes, Squelch or Trickbind do the ‘counter activated ability’ thing as well, but Voidslime is much more versatile (depite not having the Split Second of Trickbind of the Draw a Card of Squelch). Your Scryb Rangers do very good work in various matchups, like untapping your Mistbind Cliques or tapped attackers equipped with Swords in order to surprise block and kill their attackers. If you think you will miss your next land drop, you can even end of turn the Scryb Ranger.
This will allow you to tap your mana dudes (Birds of Paradise and Noble Hierarch) as well as your lands for mana, then untap one via Scryb Ranger. You then bounce a Forest to your hand and then play it as your land drop. You’ve just generated 2 extra mana! This is not an uncommon play for when you want to cast and equip a Sword of Feast and Famine on your turn 3 (even with the missed land drop). Obviously you get insane value if you connect with the equipped creature, since you get to untap and setup a Spellstutter Sprite counter (or Mana Leak). Don’t be sad if your counterspell was Voidslime either (you can activate the Scryb Ranger ability on your opponent’s turn as well to generate another mana and allow you to go ahead and Voidslime their spell.
Faeries used to be green. True story!
The deck is worth a try for anyone looking for something cool and different to try (I always am) in a format that is still open to innovative brews. I am not a fan of the overpriced Bitterblossom at the moment either, but it still can be a ‘thing’ depending on how the metagame shift.
I was a little shocked to see that this little gem is being released in Magic 2015:
Yeah … we probably don’t want our opponents casting Gryff here
I really like it when cards that are meh (like Torpor Orb) get a body attached to their ability to make them very playable. Things like Magus of the Moon, Thalia, etc. It gives you the opportunity to maindeck hate cards with decent stats in decks that are more aggressive all while keeping the aggro plan going.
While a budget version of the deck is possible, I would not really recommend it. You can’t fully replace cards like Noble Hierarch and swords, etc. Spellstutter Sprite is criminally underplayed in a format where it can counter soooo many spells with it (even without the extra Fairies in play). Wish I still had that Spellstutter playmat I did her holding an Umezawa’s Jitte …

Sometimes you make a random Google search and are just blown away by the results. I encountered this deck while trying to find ‘budget edh decks’ or something along those lines. Amidst the infinite posts of people saying: “Ashling, the Pilgrim and 99 Mountains. LOL”, this little gem was unearthed. Granted, surprise is a big factor in this deck’s success as it will probably not work twice (then again…). Boseiju gives you that extra oomph! to overcome counterspells when you want to ‘combo off’.
Warning: this deck is
Dark Sphere DreamsCommander Format Creatures: 5 1 Maralen of the Mornsong Instants: 2 Sorceries: 1 Artifacts: 12 1 Expedition Map
|
Lands: 80 72 Swamp 1 Peat Bog 1 Ebon Stronghold 1 Reliquary Tower 1 Boseiju, Who Shelters All 1 Glacial Chasm 1 Buried Ruin 1 Crystal Vein 1 Gemstone Caverns |
The deck is simply trying to accomplish one thing: Cast Ad Nauseam and win (preferably cast an end-of-turn Ad Nauseam). There are a few more cards we can maybe add to the main deck in order to increase our chances of surviving the early game, but I wanted to just reall focus on how little this thing actually costs to make. In fact, here`s the bare bones version you can make (you don’t even have to sleeve your deck at this point since the sleeves will be worth more than the deck itself… unless you use penny sleeves)

Remember these babies ? Probably from your first ever MTG deck?
You win by casting a Sickening Dreams with a full hand (aka. your whole deck give or take) then discarding a bunch of cards ( roughly 50? depending on how much life other players are at). You then activate the ‘awesome’ Dark Sphere to halve the damage to you from Sickening Dreams. Of course, counterspells will ruin your day, so you can set up by getting a Boseiju early on with Maralen on turn 4 or an earlier Expedition Map. The rest of the deck is there to accelerate us, even a turn 3 Astral Cornucopia is fine if we have the Ad Nauseam already in hand so we can ‘go off’ on turn 4. You need colored mana though, so Sol Ring is surprisingly absent (2 black required on turn 3 if you are casting Maralen on that turn). The other lands are mostly accelerants or buy us time (Glacial Chasm) or can recur a countered spell (Dark Sphere). Elixir of Immoratality can allow us to start over everytime we whiff our combo as well (Assuming Maralen can remain in play). It’s definitely an under 50$ commander deck and then under 10$ if you go with the ‘no frills’ version.
1 Ad Nauseam
1 Dark Sphere
1 Sickening Dreams
1 Elixir of Immortality
95 Swamps
It doesn’t even merit its own little decklist box thingy, that’s how cheap it is.
For those of you that are in the mood for upgrading the deck in value, tricks or resilience you can go ahead and run some Gatherer searches. So far I’ve got:
Ivory Tower
Mishra’s Bauble
Urza’s Bauble
Phyrexian Tower
Slaughter pact
Duress/Thoughtseize
You can always keep it lying around and troll newer players with it, kinda like a ‘Magic Trick’ in its own right. Right?

PS: Yes, it actually took me a while to find a ‘DDT’ in Magic: the Gathering but it happened. Thank you mark Tedin for drawing such an awesome card (Repentant Vampire). Also, thanks to Sasha who asked me for this card, since I would have probably never stumbled upon it on my own.

The promo card given out to everyone participating is:
Where’s that FOIL angel token I had lying around?
Much like the Vengevine of last year, the card is a Mythic and sure to be in demand. Be it Modern or Commander, Geist of Saint Traft always wiggles his way into some kind of deck. A lot of players might just want a more ‘affordable’ foil copy for their cubes (Along with all those sweet Conspiracy FOIL draft artifacts and Hidden Agenda cards). If you’re good/lucky enough to make it into the Top 8, you can even claim this awesome playmat:
Is that Liliana’s veil?
I’m guessing this is a not so subtle hint that Liliana is the black planeswalker in Magic 2015. We do catch a small glimpse of her in the Trailer for Duels of the Planeswalkers 2015 Garruk is the main character it seems. Is he a flip card? Monoblack? or something really really bizarre. I’m almost willing to bet one of his abilities will be a Beast Within. Go on down and give your almost last hurrah to Standard, give it the good old ‘college try’!
Here’s a little something to do with your extra copies of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx copies you have lying around:
Nykthos GreenModern Format Creatures: 23 4 Arbor Elf Sorceries: 6 2 Genesis Wave Planeswalkers: 4 Enchantments: 6
|
Lands: 21 7 Forest 1 Temple Garden 2 Stomping Ground 4 Verdant Catacombs 2 Misty Rainforest 1 Kessig Wolf Run 4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx Sideboard 1 Stony Silence 1 Spellskite 1 Scavenging Ooze 1 Rest in Peace 2 Ghost Quarter 2 Fracturing Gust 1 Dismember 2 Courser of Kruphix 1 Combust 1 Ancient Grudge 1 Beast Within 1 Obstinate Baloth |
The original list ran 1 x Grafdigger’s Cage, but I opted to run 1 x Beast Within instead (also cage stops your Genesis Wave from putting creatures into play). I also cut a Stony Silence in favor of an Obstinate Baloth. I find it is a rather decent surprise card against non-targeted discard (Liliana of the Veil) as well as being a nice pocket of life for when you are not being the aggressor.
You also get to cast this sweet card. It still looks awesome despite being about 10 + years old.
Turn 1 : Forest (or Stomping Ground or Temple Garden) into Utopia Sprawl
Turn 2: Burning-Tree Emissary, Burning-Tree Emissary, play Nykthos, tap for 5 green mana. Cast Garruk Wildspeaker, untap Nykthos and Utopia Sprawl land, tap Nykthos for 7 (plus the one mana you still have leftover) to cast Primeval Titan or Primal Command (putting one of their lands back on top and getting Eternal Witness maybe?)
Turn 3: Opponent is completely disgusted and is unsure that this even actually turn 3.
Some cards like Wistful Selkie can be Boggart Ram-Gang or Leatherback Baloth if you’re feeling slightly more aggressive, but I prefer the cantrip and they both pretty much contribute the same towards devotion. Having only run the deck once, I can’t really say that Selkie is the right card here. I also adore Eternal Witness in this particular deck since it does a lot for it. It can even do ‘unimpressive’ things like grab back a fetchland if you haven’t accelerated at all, so that you can cast your turn 4 Garruk Wildspeaker. The deck also features another card that’s been slightly underplayed in Modern thus far:
Remember this guy ?
Playing Nykthos Green will oftentimes feel like you are playing a game of Commander (minus Primeval Titan, since he’s banned). It’s actually one of the more reasonably priced Modern decks out there ( you don’t ‘have’ to run the fetches) and its cost to fun ratio is pretty great. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.
Warning: Casting Primal Command versus mill decks might cause opponents to rage quit.
A long time ago, back when i played lots of Legacy, Aggro Loam was my deck of choice. You could get so much value from Life from the Loam and powerful lands, especially before Deathrite Shaman was printed.
the little engine that could
With the banning of Deathrite Shaman in Modern there is a window for graveyard decks to become better. Some people have been trying to port the Assault Loam strategy to modern. I’ve seen many different lists pop up online in the Magic Online Daily Events : some run the same creature package as the old Legacy version (Dark Confidant, Tarmogoyf and Countryside Crusher), some splash white for Knight of the Reliquary and Lingering Souls, some lists play blue instead of black and others play Young Pyromancer with Smallpox.
My list combines two cards I’ve always wanted to play in the same deck: Young Pyromancer and Lingering Souls.
This is my current list:
Aggro LoamModern Deck
Instants: 5 Sorceries: 23 4 Faithless Looting
|
Enchantments: 3 3 Seismic Assault Lands: 25 4 Blackcleave Cliffs 4 Verdant Catacombs 2 Arid Mesa 2 Graven Cairns 2 Stomping Ground 1 Blood Crypt 1 Overgrown Tomb 1 Godless Shrine 1 Forest 1 Swamp 1 Horizon Canopy 2 Raging Ravine 1 Treetop Village 1 Pendelhaven 1 Ghost Quarter |
2 Duress
2 Anger Of The Gods
2 Ancient Grudge
2 Vengeful Pharaoh
2 Surgical Extraction
2 Syphon Life
2 Engineered Explosives
1 Vault of the Archangel
The main win condition is supposed to be Seismic Assault + Life from the Loam but in reality I’ve won many more games with Young Pyromancer and Lingering Souls. With Retrace spells, Young Pyro turns all your discarded lands into 1/1 s and with Loam you can get a lot of those tokens. Casting Lingering Souls with a Young Pyromancer on the field gets you 3 tokens, 6 if you cast Lingering Souls from your hand and Flashback it. You can easily build a scary board from scratch with these cards. Every time you Dredge a Lingering Souls you basically get free tokens.
giving value to all your instants and sorceries has never been sooooo good!
The downside of Young Pyromancer is that as the only creature in the deck, it will eat all the opposing creature removal so you have to be careful when casting them. You can wait until you destroyed your opponent’s hand with the discard spells or play it while having some untapped lands to cast spells so you get some guaranteed value from it. Also, they are our best win vs uninteractives decks. If we manage to slow down their combo, we can then kill them with tokens.
The tokens can be used both for offence and defence, Spirit tokens trade with most flying creatures in the format (aside from Restoration Angel and Celestial Colonnade) and chumping with tokens until you stabilize is fine. The Godless Shrine one-of is here solely to cast Lingering Souls from your hand and to activate Vault of the Archangel from the board, but in most games you won’t even need it.
The most powerful interaction in the deck is Seismic Assault + Life from the Loam. These cards together can both control the board and win you the game. Six damage a turn is a real clock and the ability to kill any creature your opponent draws makes it very hard for most decks to win after you’ve assembled the two pieces. This is less true versus Abrupt Decay decks and is the reason why drawing multiple Seismic Assaults isn’t always a bad thing. Seismic Assault puts a lot of strain on your Red mana so I’ve built my mana base accordingly.
Manlands are the last win condition. The ‘enter the battlefield tapped’ drawback often doesn’t matter much. They truly shine on empty boards, a board state that is likely to happen with all the discard and removal. They can also be recurred with Life from the Loam. Also, game 2 and 3 they become better since our opponents are very likely to side in some graveyard hate.
Raven’s Crime is the main reason to play black in this deck. Combined with Life from the Loam, you can literally annihilate your opponent’s hand. The strong presence of combo decks in the format makes this interaction very potent. The deck also plays 25 lands so Retracing it a few time shouldn’t be a problem even if you don’t start with Life from the Loam in your opening hand. Every time you Loam and cast Raven’s Crime you basically 3 for 1 your opponent until he has no cards in hand. This strategy is very good against control decks as well, counterspells are pretty useless versus Raven’s Crime. If they can counter your Life from the Loam, sometimes this will be annoying if your hand is left with no lands but you can always Dredge it back later. Playing Raven’s Crime makes having access to multiple black mana a must, especially on the first few turns of the game. This is why I run as many black mana-producing lands as I can. Just beware of cards like Loxodon Smiter, Wilt-Leaf Liege and Obstinate Baloth !
A 1-1 split between Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize is best i think. We already take some damage from our lands so just one Thoughtseize. Inquisition is better vs aggro and Thoughtseize is better at taking away things like Cryptic Command.
I believe Abrupt Decay is a very good card right now. It can kill most relevant creatures in the format and is also is an answer to problematic hate cards such as Rest in Peace. Also, it can safely halt most creature-based combos and it kills random non-creatures too.For smaller creatures we have Flame Jab. Flame Jab is pretty good vs. specific decks, namely decks with mana dorks, decks with tokens and Affinity decks. It is also very useful combined with Young Pyromancer, just throw Jabs to the face and make lots of tokens. Flame Jab can also finish off a planeswalker or bigger creatures with lots of red mana and Life from the Loam.
Darkblast is sort of like Flame Jab, except it is instant speed, fills up our graveyard, can’t be thrown to the face and is harder to use multiple times against large creatures. This is why i think a 1-1 split between it and Flame Jab is the best. It can be a nice surprise with Young Pyromancer, just Darkblast an attacking creature, make a token and ambush the creature ! You can cast it additional times if you use it during your upkeep and then Dredge it. The card disadvantage isn’t that bad since you are filling your graveyard anyway (which is what we’re aiming for). You can do more tricks with it and Horizon Canopy.
Smallpox is a very disruptive spell and it doesn’t affect us as much as our opponents (most of the time). Discarding a card isn’t a problem, we can Loam back sacrificed lands and our only creature is Young Pyromancer plus we can sacrifice the token Smallpox created. ‘Edict’ effects are good at taking down bigger threats that the deck can’t handle without Seismic Assault, provided we kill small creatures beforehand. On the play we can hit an Urzatron lands if our opponent leads with them and Celestial Colonnade which UW/x players often play first.
Life from the Loam is the centerpiece of this deck, but it is possible to win without them (usually via Lingering Souls and Young Pyromancer). In this deck, getting 3 lands is the equivalent of getting 3 spells a lot of the time.
Faithless Looting is basically draw 2 for one mana with Flashback since many of our cards operate from the graveyard. You can also Loam and just discard 2 lands. Also, if you draw multiple Seismic Assaults and don’t need them you can ‘loot’ them away. You can also discard Lingering Souls when you don’t have access to your Godless Shrine or Horizon Canopy.
25 lands is the minimum requirement for this deck since you get lots of value from them. Topdecking a land isn’t as bad as it can be in other decks because you can generally do something with it. The basic lands are a concession to Blood Moon, Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter. If you expect your opponent to play Blood Moon , then you should always search for your basic Forest so you can keep on Loaming. Also sometimes you don’t want to take damage from fetched lands, so having the option of getting a basic is nice.
Boo! the fun police is in the house
Horizon Canopy can do a lot of work. Firstly, it is an additional white source which is sometimes useful. Secondly, you can Loam it and still draw your card for the turn. Lastly, with Horizon Canopy as your sixth land and with 2 other Green mana sources: you can Loam 2 times a turn. Just Dredge and cast Life from the Loam, play Horizon Canopy, Dredge Loam with Canopy’s draw ability and Loam again. With Seismic Assault you get 5 lands to discard to it each turn, which is very useful when you need to end the game quickly. The damage from the mana ability can be an issue so one copy of Horizon Canopy is the maximum we can run in my opinion.
Ghost Quarter is general hate vs. special lands. It helps against Tron and kills Celestial Colonnade as well as other manlands that are found in a lot of decks in the Modern format. The deck is pretty color intensive so we only run one in order to avoid mana problems. Having a recurring way to handle problem lands seems good enough. Against a few decks that run almost no basic Lands you can even cut them off from a color and mana screw them. This won’t happen often as most decks run enough basic to prevent that from happening. In match-ups were Ghost Quarter is useless, we can side it out for Vault of the Archangel.
Aggro Loam is a hard deck to classify. It has aggro elements in the form of token beat down (or Tarmogoyf, Knight of the Reliquary and Countryside Crusher in the other version), lots of control elements with all the discard and removal as well as combo-ish interactions with Seismic Assault and Life from the Loam.
The deck is vulnerable to graveyard hate but we have access to Abrupt Decay and Engineered Explosives to get rid of those. Explosives is extra good vs specific deck like Aura Hexproof, Merfolk, Affinity, etc. We have access to 4 colors so we can even kill the occasional Leyline of Sanctity and Restoration Angels, if need be. Ancient Grudge can be an answer to Pithing Needle (on Seismic Assault), Grafdigger’s Cage, Relic of Progenitus, etc. You get extra value from them when they get Dredged. Anger of the Gods can replace some Smallpox vs. Birthing Pod decks. Duress is good additional discard and can replace removal vs. creature-light decks. Combined with Surgical Extraction, we can get free wins when facing combo decks. Syphon Life is here vs. burn, which is probably this deck’s worst match-up. Vengeful Pharaoh is tech vs. creature decks. When it triggers and goes back on top or your library, you can Dredge Life from the Loam and send it back in the graveyard or just discard it to Faithless Looting or Smallpox. Vault of the Archangel can make our tokens trade with anything and the life gain as well.
The worst thing that can happen to us is Surgical Extraction on Life from the Loam, it becomes very difficult (but not impossible) to win after that. Remember, if you have Horizon Canopy on the battlefield, you can play around Surgical Extraction by ‘cycling ‘ dredging it in response. Just keep Loaming and play Hoprizon Canopy after Life from the Loam has resolved without passing priority. Scavenging Ooze can be a problem but we have main deck answers to that. Just kill it on the spot (if you can) whenever you see it! A trick to kill them with Flame Jab is to cast it on ooze and retrace multiple times without passing priority, your opponent will then not have the opportunity to exile your Flame Jab since it will always be on the stack when the opponent gets priority. Another weakness of the deck is GR Tron namely because of their maindeck Relic of Progenitus.
Life from the Loam is a powerful card advantage engine. If you like playing with your graveyard, then I suggest you give this deck a spin!
A fiery fist emerges from the mountain to punch a feathery face

Another new Magic: the Gathering set means another Event Deck. This particular one is an Izzet (Blue/Red) Heroic Deck. While there are not many cards with the Heroic keyword (just 1 to be precise), the deck does seem somewhat decent. The main complain that most people have had thus far is that there is very little to no value in this particular Event Deck.
Let’s examine the list:
Wrath of the MortalsJourney into Nyx Event deck
1 Aetherling Instants: 13 1 Fated Conflagration
|
Sorceries: 7 1 Anger of the Gods Lands: 25 9 Island |
Here is a quick run-down of the rares.
If the line-up seems unimpressive, it’s because it is
I won’t go over the value card by card this time around, because there’s not much to say really. On the upside, the deck seems like a blast to play and is probably a decent deck for a newer player to pick up at a local FNM Standard event. Guttersnipe and Young Pyromancer outshine pretty much every rare in the deck as they are what holds the deck together. In true Izzet fashion, you get to ‘storm’ spells and burn your opponent little by little while gaining a small army of elementals. It’s not for everyone, but it will teach newer players how things work in the world of Magic.
You also have your good old Aetherling to close out a lengthy game. Get a few quick hits in, if they stabilize you still have a finisher or two. Same can be said for Spellheart Chimera. I really like it in this deck for a creature that has pretty much gone ignored in the Standard metagame. It’s a nice touch.
Naya SpiritbinderStandard Format

We’ve seen the traditional RG Monsters or Naya decks in Standard before. They have mana dorks, beatsticks, some planeswalker action plus a few instants/sorceries (Burn/removal). This deck is more or less that but with a combo thrown in for good measure. It involves Felhide Spiritbinder and Aurelia, the Warleader plus mana dorks. You basically need both creatures to be attacking and then either Boros Charm your team with the Aurelia untap ability on the stack. Your Felhide Spiritbinder will then untap along with a couple of mana dorks (one of which needs to provide red mana). You pay 1R to then make a copy of Aurelia, the Warleader from his inspired ability. Sacrifice the original Aurelia and attack again. Rinse and repeat.
Note that your Felhide Spiritbinder needs to go unblocked over and over or as stated before: you can cast Boros Charm and have all your guys become indestructible.
You can always just content yourself with 1 additional combat phase
Of course, when you’re not comboing your opponent to death – you can always do what the Naya decks usually do : Attack! With Domri Rade and Xenagos, the Reveler , your control matchup is pretty good. Fatties like Loxodon Smiter and Stormbreath Dragon guarantee you get the beatdown in early and often. With not much time left until Journey into Nyx Standard, why not give the deck a try? You’ll be very pleasantly surprised. Heck, I’d play it even once Journey into Nyx is Standard legal and everyone is busy trying out the new cards. You even get to accelerate into an Elspeth if things go bad.
Still one of the best cards in Standard
by Steve ‘DDT’ Giannopoulos
The third and final set of the Theros block is upon us with the pre-release being this weekend. Instead of making random comments about all the cards, I have decided to simply point out the ones that stand out for various formats. The set does offer much more than Born of the Gods did in terms of brewing and I do hope that shifts the Standard format around a bit. It’s been pretty stagnant for a while with lower than usual attendance at most of the local card shops in the area. Magic has been on the rise as of late, but it had to eventually have a less popular/bad block along the way. It just saddens me that Theros was that block. I guess we’ll just jump right into it by color:
Take that ‘Shroud’!
This might be somewhat decent in Standard, but it’s definitely at its best in Legacy. Now decks like Maverick and Death and Taxes gain an extra weapon against Storm decks and the like (on top of Thalia). It’s much better to have these enchantments in creature form as they allow us to put the pressure on our combo opponents as well. Also, it can be tutored for with Enlightened Tutor (this is going to be a common point for a lot of the cards here). It’s an upgrade to True Believer (that’s easier to splash as well) and can it into a tutorable sideboard card along the likes of Ethersworn Canonist.
Oblivion Ring
They eliminated the stack tricks with it and Oblivion Ring finds its way to the Standard Format yet again. With Detention Sphere rotating in November, we can’t let UW have the best weapons against the Gods. It’s a good ‘catch all’ card that everyone can appreciate.
Seraph of the Dawn v 2.0
Not sure how many aggressive decks are actually going to run this. It (Seraph of the Dawn) did see some play in more control decks’ sideboards back when it was standard. I can effectively negate 2 attackers, so to speak. Blocking a 3 power guy and letting a 2 or lower power creature through. Due to its lifelink ability, we keep our lifetotal the same. The heroic ability is definitely a plus, although I’m not sure how often it will actually trigger in serious constructed play.
Immortal, huh?
This direct upgrade to Erase is cute and will end up dealing with even more permanents once Return to Ravnica block rotates and the Theros cards see even more Standard play. Not a huge fan of the cad myself, but it does help the gods from getting out of hand in the future (Thassa, anyone?)
Just in time for Easter
While not being a big fan of the uber controls strategies myself, I can really appreciate this card nonetheless. It’s a good ‘Wall’ against the aggressive decks and gives you a little bonus as well. Some Esper decks ran Yoked Ox early in the format, so it’s not unreasonable to think this will end up in quite a few sideboards. For some fun times, try running both in a Doran, the Siege Tower deck in Modern. For everyhting else, there’s Phenax.
Much better looking than the original
Once Selesnya Charm rotates, this card will probably somewhat replace it. You lose all the flexibility of the Charm, but you can now splash it in just about any deck. It still doesn’t deal with Stormbreath Dragon though … Still, almost anything that has Monstrous will be at 4 or greater power, so ‘Yay!’.
You can’t Reprisal a God though 😦
Miracle!
Maybe, just maybe Aurelia’s Fury will finally see some play with this. People will definitely try it in heroic decks obviously. It can make your Flames of the Firebrand into a rather efficient spell, clearing would-be blockers and triggering your heroic guys for peanuts. A pretty fun ‘build around me’ card that will have tons of people looking up cards on Gatherer.
It can potentially generate mana for cards like Aurelia’s Fury if you have multiple Battlefield Thaumaturges in play, since its effect does stack.
Cute and deadly….ok, maybe just cute
At first glance, the effect is symmetrical. However, when combined with Spirit of the Labyrinth, it can be a nice little card drawer. Your opponent will already have drawn for their turn, but you will have not. It’s not the best thing since peanut butter and jelly, but it’s still a sweet little combo that could find a home in a more aggressive UW deck. You do get to see what each player would draw before deciding, so you can just decide to mill that card your opponent scryed on top if you’re not over enthused about what you would draw.
Just make sure you benefit from it before your opponent gets to deal with it
Howling Mine is once again in the Standard format. With the ‘turbo-Fog-esque’ Maze’s End decks we are accustomed to seeing in local event, it’s not unreasonable to think that this would a welcome addition to them. Sure, it works both ways, but your deck wil be more geared to take advantage of it. Fog their dudes, drop a land, repeat. Supreme Verdict once in a while. All is good, right?
Of course it can also just make it into some kind of mill build. Since there isn’t one that’s mainstream Standard at the moment, I think it can be worth looking into.
For a mere 7 mana, you get to grab your opponent’s best creature and give it flying plus a boost. Ok, it is rather pricey. Early on, you can get to play it and repeatedly attack for 1 in the air. Yeah, not much better. I guess the best way to put it is that you get to grab your opponent’s best creature and if it then dies, you still get a 1/1 flier out of it. The point that is hard to sell someone on is whether or not this is worth 7 mana. Grab an opposing Blood Baron? Stormbreath?
Control decks won’t really need it and aggro decks might use it a bit, but it’s mostly a very midrange card.
In monoblue devotion, it can sort of replace Judge’s Familiar (it usually doesn’t counter that much anyhow). It’s also a card that you won’t mind seeing later in the game, if you’re mana flooded or otherwise. If the deck does end up running more than 1 Nykthos again, this card might be a worthy inclusion. In a deck with Prophet of Kruphix, you can even Mind Control their guys at instant speed !
Savor the flavor!
Well, it’s settled: If Kiora wants one, then it’s good enough for us. Obviously you’ll want to pair this with any enchantment that gives you value when it enters the battlefield. Think Oath of the Ancient Wood. Yes, it’s janky as hell! Dragon Mantle ? Bouncing an early Hypnotic Siren so that you can Mind Control something late game? Ok, maybe not.
Pre-Journey into Nyx, there are not that many good bounceback enchantments. Eidolon of Blossoms is a good start, as is any other constellation card. That’s a start, but is it enough to build a deck with?
To infinity an beyond!
I’ve seen a few combos involving the new Ajani and Vorel, but I seriously doubt anything will come of it. Infinite combos is something Wizards of the Coast tries to catch in testing if they are too easy/consistent. Still, in formats like Commander it should be another Lighthouse Chronologist. A creature that everyone will just hate (Consecrated Sphinx). Why are most of these guys blue, eh?
Still, it’s another heroic dude that grows. He might wiggle his way into a Blue/White or Blue/Black heroic deck. You can ultimate him and get another turn of attacking goodness. Stranger things have happened.
That’s quite disgusting
This card is pretty much a functional reprint of Mesmeric Fiend. I can see it played in a Black/X aggro deck. Use it to take away your opponent’s board-clearing card (Supreme Verdict, for example) and keep the aggression going. Even 1 damage is good when you’re trying to get your opponent down to zero life. It’s a nice follow up to a Turn 1 Thoughtseize.
It can’t be abused with stack tricks, like Mesmeric Fiend could however. In a Monoblack sideboard, it can be paired with Lifebane Zombie to completely decimate the hands of those Green/White aggro decks that still don’t understand that this is not their format. they run no removal (because Selesnya Charm hardly counts). It is an enchantment, so it’s something you can pick up from milling yourself with Grisly Salvage, Commune with the Gods and Kruphix’s Insight. If there is a GB dredge deck post Return to Ravnica rotation, I can surely see this card being somewhere in the 75.
Huh?
You needn’t worry. I have not gone off the deep end by suggesting that this is going to see serious play. It’s just Wizards of the Coast‘s way to have another Grave Pact in circulation. The card has infinite reprints, yet still manages to sell for 10$. This way, we can have a slightly different version and Commander players can run both. Those who don’t feel like shelling out 10$ for the original can have this one. Everyone’s happy.
Quite a tricky ‘disadvantage’
Hooray for another 2/1 for one mana with a slight drawback (Tormented Hero). The fun thing about this card’s drawback is that it can later be used as an advantage if we draw it late game. It can effectively pacify one of their creatures by bestowing it and allow us to push through the final few points of damage needed to snatch a victory.
It also happens to be a minotaur, so that tribe now has a 1-drop creature. I doubt it will allow minotaurs to see any more serious constructed play than they already have in Standard. They do get some more support in this set, but everything seems to cost 3 mana for some reason.
Juzam Djinn would be proud
Here comes another undercosted fattie! He’s even fat on the card’s art.
I like to compare these kinds of cards to burn spells. He basically will deal ‘burst’ damage. Sort of like a 3/3 flier for 3 would deal over 2 turns. The longer he is able to attack, the better. He eventually gets dealt with, for the most part. You are giving your opponent an extra card per turn, which is pretty dangerous. Of course it’s safer against the little aggro decks since it won’t give them anything to really take this guy down. It’s somewhat more dangerous when you give them an answer to it: Detention Sphere, Hero’s Downfall, Banishing Light, etc
Master of the Feast being an enchantment is very disadvantageous in this case, since it turns their Revoke Existence and the like into live removal as well. Still, it’s very ‘all in’ and combos with Spirit of the Labyrinth as well as Notion Thief.
Uh, say what?
No, I am not trolling you. Seriously. It’s just a black Sedge Scorpion. The keyword being : Black.
One of the monoblack deck’s biggest problem is an early aggro rush. Trading a one-drop for anything and I am mean anything is just good. It buys you time, it might even deter attackers. I’m not saying it will happen, but it is probably very sideboard worthy. It’s like a conditional removal spell that contributes a bit for devotion if it sticks around. I know it doesn’t sound impressive, but it does its part.
One of my favorite cards in the set
The art on this card is quite nice. The quote is rather good and the effect can be game-breaking. It’s not exactly a reanimation spell, but it might as well be. There are a few Gods at 7 toughness and Worldspine Wurm at 15! The Worldspine scenario would probably require a Lotleth Troll and proper timing to be worth it. Otherwise, it might find its way into another self-mill deck or something wacky in Commander. Flashing a potential huge threat is always cool.
Pyrostatic Pillar on a stick
In older formats, such as Legacy, this card is pretty sweet. It contributes more to the beatdown/burn plan that a red deck would want over a simple enchantment. In Standard, it’s quite different. The decks casting this will also be casting small stuff themselves. It would then become a sort of damage race where you would need to calculate if it’s worth hitting yourself for 2 in order to continue dropping more dudes or casting some burn in order to win.
It’s going to see sideboard play at first in… you guessed it: Red decks. Will it move up to the main deck? Your guess is as good as mine.
Surprise(s) !
Act of Treason always seems to find itself in the monored deck’s sideboards, so I would not be surprised if this card did as well. The double red cost is inconsequential, since it will almost always be in monored. You get to cast Act of Treason at its base, so Strive is an upside to it.
Late game, you usually draw an Act of Treason and think : ” Almost, but not quite”. This time you can tap six mana and potentitally just win out of nowhere.
Chandra (0) x 2
The stats on this card are not very impressive, but keep in mind the trample part. This means that if your opponent chump blocks you with a 1/1, you still get to trample over one point of damage and use its effect. Double strike means you can do it twice. is it greedy and ambitious? Yes!
Is it exciting and somewhat different? Of course!
It’s a card that I really want to like, but might ultimately fall short. Still ‘shocking’ my opponent on an empty board and ‘drawing’ two cards makes me all tingly. It really wants to be enchanted by some kind of pump aura. Dragon Mantle ? Maybe …
Splinter Twin it is not
Take your best creature, now copy it. Now copy it again for each 2R extra you pay. Heroic? trigger its heroic!
Sounds like a dream? perhaps, but it’s pretty cool. You can even copy quite a few more creatures than you normally would with Battlefield Thaumaturge. Copy Fabled Hero a few times for some massive damage! Two copies can generate 16 damage. Not too shabby!
They finally printed an ‘enchantress’ but is it too late?
It’s about time, but at least it’s here. I really wanted this thing as of the first set, so that it gives people an enabler for some kind of enchantress build. I believe quite a few people have become ‘disenchanted’ by this block and this might be a little too late. Still, contrary to most enchantress cards, it triggers on its own ‘enter the battlefield’ effect. It’s ‘decently’ costed and all it needs is a home.
You can sort of play it in a G/B dredge-style deck with Kruphix’s Insight post-rotation if the deck becomes almost full enchantment creature based. At the moment, it might seem to be a wee bit inefficient though. You can try to shove into a kind of Sphere of Safety deck and make that work. It makes your Mana Bloom into a draw spell as well as a ramp spell. Mana Bloom also can allow you to cast this on turn 3. You can then bounce Mana Bloom back on your upkeep, re-cast it and draw a card. You don’t actually need to pump any mana into Mana Bloom if you’re just trying to draw cards with it later game either.
Still, making your Detention Spheres and Banishing Lights into draw spells is pretty sweet too.
Oh, the possibilities!
The timing of this card could not be any better. It is going to be a GB dredge enabler. Will it make the deck more enchantmnet-based? Probably.
As with Commune with the Gods, you can grab your Whip of Erebos (as opposed to Grisly Salvage). Nighthowler is also an enchantment. Pharika is an enchantment as well. Will it modify the deck as of right now or will we have to wait to see it played in November? I think there are just enough enchantment creatures to give it a shot now. I would probably just keep Lotleth Trolls and Satyr Wayfinders as the non-enchantment creatures. You can probably piece together a rough list quite quickly with Herald of Torment and the usual suspects. The thing I like a lot is that now we get the GB Scry land, so you can scry first before casting this and know you can at least pick up the card on top off the mill.
Heroic? Check .Mutiple Targets? Check . Removal? Check?!
On the surface, it might just seem like a funny combat trick. Setessan Tactics is quite a bit more than that. Heroic some of your dudes, have them grow and watch them take out your opponent’s creatures. Not bad, not bad at all!
It can shine in aggro mirror matches in decks that don’t necessarily pack much removal. Even at just 2 targets you can pump a couple of your heroic creatures and take out two of your opponent’s. At 2 mana, it’s like a better Pit Fight but let’s not go there…
GB dredge much?
While it’s not a creature, it is basically a second copy of Nighthowler and works better with cards like Kruphix’s Insight. I actually find it funny that for a creature matters color, the more promising green cards in this set are non-creatures. another thing that is nice, is that since it’s not an Bestow/Aura, you can keep targeting whatever you want.
You can also turn a bestowed Boon Satyr into lethal damage, a play I will certainly attempt. Who knows, maybe Deadbridge Chant will see some fringe play as well …
+1 = go get Elspeth
So GW finally gets its two color planeswalker and taht cycle is complete. Ajani might find a home in some Junk or Bant planeswalker control deck. He’s clearly going to be run with his planeswalker buddy Elspeth, Sun’s Champion. You cast him on turn 5, find Elspeth in your top 5 and cast her on turn 6. Then just pump your Elspeth tokens with him or dig for something else in your deck.
He doesn’t protect himself per se, but he is able to dig up something that will on the following turn. I don’t think he is as powerful as most of the planeswalkers we have seen in the past, but he is pretty interesting. The three abilities don’t exactly work together, nor do you need to ultimate (since it doesn’t win you the game or anything).
I actually really hate that he only find aura as I was hoping to live the dream of Ajani ultimate with a Sanguine Bond in play. I can dream right?
Not what we were expecting
It’s not really what I was expecting in terms of abilities. While Obzedat does help you get to its 7 devotion requirement, it’s not really synergetic in terms of ability. I’m not sure you can run more than 2 in a deck and the ‘punisher’ style ability (usually seen in red cards past: Browbeat) is not that great at first glance.
It’s going for about 30$ on pre-sale and I would have no problem trading one away in order to obtain 3 Pharikas (going for about 10$).
7 power is just insane
While its ability doesn’t complement the main devotion-getter (Boros Reckoner), it is quite decent. The pseudo evasion is nice and it also applies to himself as well, which is great. You can even have a Hammer of Purphoros on turn 3 after having cast a double-white/red guy on turn 2 in order to get a hasty 7/4 Iroas swinging as of Turn 4.
Your guys don’t die via combat damage while attacking, in true Boros fashion. You finally get to do what a Boros deck is supposed to do, flavor-wise (something you couldn’t really do with Purphoros or Heliod).
To bolt or not to bolt
The thing that is cool about this god is that he can easily get to devotion via Blue/Red cards (Boros Reckoner and Nightveil Specter). Unfortunately, he will most likely see play in some UWR (USA) control build as a finisher. He potentially nets you cards, regardless of them being lands and deals some burn damage to your opponent/annoying planeswalker.
I don’t particularly like him, since he only really does something as of turn 6 (barring acceleration). Still, the effects are somewhat cool and he should rank amongst the more popular gods. I can also maybe hope that Grixis becomes a thing and then I won’t feel too bad about running him in a non Sphinx’s Revelation deck.
Very very Commander
As much as I like Kruphix (Spellbook and Upwelling, sort of) , he will probably end up in Commander decks most of the time. Still, you can hope to live the dream by stocking up on mana in a Bant deck only to unleash a huuuuuuuuuuuge Sphinx’s Revelation. You can continue to live that dream by not having to discard any of the cards you drew. Magic Christmas Land? Maybe….
Of all the Gods, Kruphix probably costs the most in order to do the least (at least immediately). It’s not impossible to get him to be a creature though (think monoblue).
Does whatever a spider can! And then some
GB Devotion enabler? Self-mill? Random utility? Enchantment?
All of the above. He feeds your graveyard and even allows you to retrieve a piece that you normally can’t with Commune with the Gods and Kruphix’s Insight. It’s rather efficient in that respect. He himself can also be dredged out by Kruphix’s Insight, since he’s an enchantment. Being able to pay 5 mana to regrowth an Abrupt Decay is nice too.
Its creature stats are not too shabby either. The only bad part is that he exiles himself to regrowth a card. This does not allow you to recycle him afterwwards with Pharika, but that’s fine: he fills up the grave for you so there’s plenty of fodder in there.
Makes lil’ bonhommes
Pharika is my favorite God of the set for a few reasons. The first being that I like the GB dredge style deck and she fits in the deck pretty well. Secondly, I really like the fact that you can pack 4 copies (a la Thassa) as opposed to the other Gods in the set. You can mill extra copies and still get value out of them (Nighthowler or Pharika’s ability) or discard them to Lotleth Troll. You can also just cast them on top of the existing Pharika and exile the graveyard Pharika to make a 1/1 deathtouch token.
She gives your little removal creatures. They are enchantments to boot, so that’s going to be good with constellation (Eidolon of Blossoms). Most creatures in the format don’t have flying so they are pretty much also removal. The big drawback of her ability is that if you target your opponent’s grayard, they get the 1/1 deathtouch snake. It’s quite a downer, I know. You won’t really have to use it all that much unless they are going to do some kind of mad reanimation play.
I’m pretty glad she’s the least expensive God of the set as I want to stock up on them early and play her in the dredge deck. Outside of that, she can maybe find her way in a GB midrange deck with stuff like Courser of Kruphix, Underworld Connections, Nightveil Specter, etc. Basically a goodstuff.dec
More ‘dual lands’ if you plan on playing these color combos
Most sought-after card in the set?
The comparisons to City of Brass have been made. The Commander players want their foil versions. All the multicolor decks that are not heavily control want to run four of these. Will it live up to the hype? I think it will.
Remember to Pre-Order if you haven’t already

A winner is you!
While not as sexy as the two previous Game Day Champion playmats, this one is all about the bragging rights. Can you snatch your third playmat and be the Theros Block triple crown champion?
Ok, I just made that up. Still, winning 3 back to back separate Game Day mats is quite an accomplishment. It might not be up there with winning a Grand Prix, Pro Tour or even a PTQ … but it has its own charm. You should probably scout your area’s Game Days carefully as multiple stores run them and you pretty much want to play in as many as possible. (May 24-25)
Should you fail, you can always get these:

A non-evasive efficiently costed Nightmare that may see competitive play

For when you wanna group hug the %^!T out of everybody
You can only get the Dictate of Kruphix if you Top 8 the Game Day though, which is not exremely hard unless there happens to be wayyyyy to many people at this event. The events are usually free for the most part, but some stores charge you a small entry fee (which includes a participation booster). This should not discourage you from participating as you probably get your money’s worth just by Top 8′ ing.
Good luck and Happy Game Day!
