Being able to jam a bunch of your Standard format cards into a Modern deck is always fun. It somewhat justifies playing both formats (for example, if you played Voice of Resurgence a few Standard formats ago, you’re probably happy you still have those handy). Of course, it doesn’t always happen that way (see: Siege Rhino).

Aside from the usual Modern staples that you may have from other Modern decks, the deck is not very pricey to construct with the exception of Horizon Canopy, but that can be replaced. You’ll often get a Turn 2 Nissa, Voice of Zendikar which roadblocks many many decks by simply pumping out a plant token every turn. Of course, it’s more important role here is that it buffs your token team by giving them some +1/+1 counters every so often. Who needs Honor of the Pure and co. when you have a planeswalker that gives you that little bit of extra versatility.

Gideon offers another angle of attack against decks that are not equipped to take him down (decks with no Path to Exile / Dismember). Although, with the rise of Nahiri, the Harbinger in Modern Jeskai decks, Dreadbore is now a thing.

The 1-2 Zendikar token punch!

The rest of the deck is very unsurprising really, it’s most of what we’re already used to seeing in Black/White Tokens. The only reason the black splash exists is for the Lingering Souls flashback option which comes up a lot. Like, a lot a lot! Windbrisk Heights is a little less exciting as we can’t cast a Zealous Persecution out from under it in mid-attack to change combat math and potentially wipe out some of our opponent’s board. It’s still fine value, since it gives us a free card and if that card happens to be Gavony Township then we can insta-pump our attackers as well in an uncounterable way.

Sequencing your spells for maximum damage/efficiency is very important in this deck. However, unlike most aggressive decks, it actually does very very well defensively. Don’t expect to be favored against a lot of combo decks in Game 1 though as it’s mostly a race and the deck doesn’t pack many answers to those. It’s definitely a nice deck to have in your Modern gauntlet and to try out at some of your local gaming store’s Modern events.

August 2016 FNM Promo

crumbling vestige fnm

Eldrazi-licious!

Need some colored mana for to keep playing the Eldrazis when the Origins painlands go away? Look no further: Crumbling Vestige is here to save the day. Giving you a sweet mana despite coming into play tapped, it will have no trouble filling that Eldrazi void. Also, since it’s a ‘sort of’ Tendo Ice- Bridge, it may even get some Commander love.

Here’s the little land in all it’s glory:

Eternal Masters FULL Spoiler

The long awaited set is now fully spoiled and many are left wondering: “Where’s all the spicy reprints?” Sure, there are some cool additions to the spoilers, but there are quite a few cards that could have been in there that are not (most likely to enable cooler draft/sealed archetypes). On the plus side, many players that like foiling up their decks will be pleased with cards that appear in foil form for the first time (ie: Winter Orb, Worn Powerstone, etc.)

spatial contortion

Ouch! that looks rather uncomfortable

Spatial Contortion is a great defense and offensive cards, allowing a high toughness creature to lay the smackdown on our opponent or simply killing off a 3 toughness or less opposing pest. The artwork is just magnificent (much better than the regular card art) . So head on down to your local gaming store in the month of July to pick up this sweet card.

June 2016 FNM Promo

sylvan scrying

Not too fancy, but it’ll do the job

It’s pretty cool that we get a card that sees some minor Standard play as well as a decent amount of play in Modern in RG Tron decks. Of course, since it has the word ‘search’ on it, you can bet that it also gets jammed into a bunch of green-based commander decks.

scrying

You can really appreciate the original artwork in its larger form, since it allows us to see Nissa’s reflection in the water in great detail. So make a date for some June 2016 FNM’s at your local gaming store and grab yourself a pretty sweet card. Sylvan Scrying is just too fine to pass up.

Planeswalkers of Shadows Over Inninstrad

nahiri

Not a bad mix of abilities for a color comob that can’t draw cards. Pretty sweet maindeck Naturalize, so for that alone we may see her in many sideboards. The ultimate is fairly unexciting, but if you’re packing a few board-changing fatties in a somewhate reanimator build then it may be worth it. Also, Madness…

arlin1arlin2

Arlinn Kord is somewhat reminiscent of Huntmaster of the Fells. It will be flipping a few times but not gaining you life in the process. The 5 total abilities will appeal to almost all casual players. With the new CMC ruling she may even be modern playable (ie: not dying to Abrupt Decay). Her ultimate is pretty nuts, effectively turning your creatures into removal spells much like a Warstorm Surge.

jace

Ah, the mighty Jace! At 5 mana, he’s very average indeed. Still, much better than the one from M15, right? He is basically a flipped Erayo on ultimate, and it doesn’t take forever to get there so that’s not terrible. We get a very watered-down Jace, the Mindsculptor ‘Brainstorm’ ability. Still, if people tried to play Narset Transcendant in their Standard decks….

sorin

Ok, I have never seen a +1 ability as stupid as this. Yes, it’s based off of Baneful Omen and he does cost a whopping 6 mana. However, it’s his – x ability that’s sure to be activated quite often if and when he gets some of the Standard limelight. Being able to kill/finish off other planeswalkers is rather interesting. As with the original Chandra Nalar, killing off somewhat mid to fat creatures and still sticking around to do it again in a few turns is gravy!

The Commander-esque ultimate abilty is fine, but let’s not kid ourselves here: it’s not happening very often if ever.

There you have it! A brief look at the four planeswalkers we were promised by Mark Rosewater for what is sure to be a very very exciting revisit of Innistrad. Hope many of you will attend the pre-releases of Shadow over Innistrad to get a chance to crack one of these cool planeswalkers.

FNM May 2016

fnm may 2016

Interesting FNM promo indeed

So is Wizards of the Coast bringing back this little guy in some way to Standard or Modern? Is it more of a nod to Eternal Masters? The artwork is super duper terrible, but a foil version of this paticular goblin is always welcome. Here’s the up-close and personal version:
