Purple was revealed as the sixth color of Magic on stream

Circulating the web right now is a clip from Channel Fireball showcasing a new card back with six colors instead of the traditional five. The hype is real, but is Purple really going to happen?
The whole ordeal happened during a Twitch stream where Maria Bartholdi‏ showcased the new Sol Ring promo card for the viewers. Observant viewer @TheMaverickGal noticed something weird about the back of the card before the reveal happened. It clearly had an extra Purple color!

Interesting card back…

So it really did happen, multiple people starting speculating, retweeting and got hyped. Tolarian Community College jumped in and retweeted the news too and it started gaining real traction all over social media.

Twitch Clip can be seen here

Purple has been discussed before

Wizards have been talking about the sixth color of MTG earlier. Back in Planar Chaos, it was going to be added as a color between blue and black making it WUPBRG. It was intended to only be in that one set, but in the end, they decided to not follow through with it. The reason was that they did not want players to get invested in the color and then never be able to update their purple decks.

Read more about their intent on making Purple in the following article: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/color-purple-2007-01-29

Purple would open up a lot of cool possibilities and be a refreshing addition to the established color wheel, but it does sound like a really hard challenge with how balanced the game is right now. We also “recently” got Colorless cards in Battle for Zendikar which do kind of represent a sixth option in the color wheel. So it is also a bit weird for them to go in that direction now.

Fake News?

Maria did comment on the thread with the following

So, unfortunately, this is all because of a goof when googling for a  card back image to use for their Sol Ring Promo, which does look amazing by the way. Oh well, it was a fun little hype train to jump on even if just for a little while. What do you think about a new color? and what mechanism would it have?

Capcom secret-reveals ‘Project Battle,’ a Capcom card battling game

So, this one really came out of nowhere! Just last night, video game personality Maximilian Doodstreamed an early build of a brand new Capcom game called Project Battle. This is a card battling game where you play using classic Capcom characters like Ryu and Mega Man X. Franchises shown off in the stream include Street Fighter, Mega Man, Darkstalkers, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, and probably more. No platforms, pricing, or even a final name for Project Battle have been revealed yet.

YouTube channel Duel Links Meta is revealing details about how the game plays though, which you can view below. The game seems comparable to Hearthstone. You select a Capcom character, each of which has three special abilities. Then you build a 30-card deck. The short, 1:48 video describes it a lot better than I can, because the truth is I’ve never played of any these digital card battlers.

Apparently, in these previews Project Battle is being played on a custom emulator that demonstrates how Capcom would desire the game to look. So this game is genuinely very early in its development.

Well, in any case, consider my curiosity piqued. Capcom has a bunch of beloved franchises (Mega Man!), and I might consider knocking them around in a card battling format.

Stay tuned for more developments, and check out images below.

COLLECTIBLES REMAIN SOLE BRIGHT SPOT AS GAMESTOP SALES DECLINE

GameStop’s collectibles business was the only real sales bright spot in its down fiscal Q1 ended May 4, as restructuring of the category continues.

The chain retailer reported a 13.3% overall decline in sales (11.5% in constant currency), driven by comp store sales declines of 10.2% in the U.S. (and 10.4% internationally).

Collectibles sales were up 10.5% to $157 million for the quarter. The only other up category was accessories, which was up less than 1%. New hardware was down 35%, software sales were down 4.3%, pre-owned sales were down 20.3%, and digital receipts were down 6.7%.

The troubled ThinkGeek online operation, which exhibited its first signs of trouble last quarter (see “GameStop Coillectibles Sales Up, But Overall Sales Decline”), continued to have problems. Sales in the collectibles category would have been up 16% rather than 10.5% if not for ThinkGeek.com, COO/CFO Rob Lloyd said in the conference call.

The company is consolidating the ThinkGeek web operation with GameStop’s, with a redirect for ThinkGeek maintaining the brand “at least initially, while we consolidate the backend operation,” CEO George Sherman told analysts.

Top categories in the collectibles category are Funko POP! figures, statues, and t-shirts, Sherman said.

While the company underperformed on sales, it beat net profit projections with a $6.8 million profit (on its $1.5 billion in sales), still down substantially from $28.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

GameStop has a number of initiatives to try to continue to respond to the digitization of its core videogame software business, according to its executives in the conference call (transcript via Seeking Alpha). It’s eliminated its dividend to conserve capital, has brought in a top tier consulting firm to help with restructuring, has begun expense reduction efforts, and deployed a special management team to manage the process. It’s already begun expense reductions; tests of experiential retailing in a number of areas, including collectibles; focusing on decluttering stores to give more attention to the best sellers; and expanding its exclusive collectibles.

“The challenge is a significant one,” Sherman told analysts. “We must immediately address SG&A [sales, general, administrative expenses – ed.] that’s been allowed to deleverage, execute on opportunities to optimize the current business and develop new revenue streams for our future. Doing so will require immediate action on our part and an ongoing sense of urgency that is off the chart.”

JAPANESE ALTERNATE-ART PLANESWALKERS

War of the Spark is all about Planeswalkers. With 36 different characters represented, the set truly showcases an all-out war for the fate of the Multiverse being fought on Ravnica.

We wanted to do something special to commemorate this event in Japan, so we worked with Japanese artists to create alternate-art versions of every planeswalker in the set. All 36 planeswalkers in War of the Spark were reimagined beautifully by artists well-known throughout Japan, including Yoshitaka Amano!

These alternate versions appear randomly in Japanese-language War of the Spark boosters, replacing the regular version of the planeswalker in the pack 50% of the time. We’ve made Japanese boosters available to retailers around the world, so you can find them nearby wherever you live.

These cards will also be available in Wizards Play Network promo packs during the Core Set 2020 play season, appearing in roughly 1:4 of packs. The alternate-art planeswalkers have only been printed in Japanese, but will appear in promo packs around the world.
